Ending of an ARG

I have never played an ARG before. Infact this 1-18-08 one is my first Very Happy

Anyways I was just wondering how does an average ARG end.

Does it end like a video game? The only prize is beating the game, or do you win anything? Like money or something?

And any more info on how it would end would be apreciated.

Hiya Uninvited Smile

There is certainly no set ending. Some, like Perplex City season one have a prize that someone wins. Others simply have a plot confusion that leaves everyone with a warm fuzzy feeling (or a Ming the Merciless reaching for his ring "is he or isn't he dead?" cliff-hanger). The saddest ending that every PM and player hopes to avoid is the implosion, when things spiral out of the PMs control, they can't keep up and they have to ungracefully retire. I've only been partly following Cloverfield, so not sure how typical of ARGs (or Chaotic Ficiton) it will be (or what typical is) but you're probably in a better position to second guess the ending Wink

I would suggest going down to the archives forum and reading some of the real ARGs that were played out and reached their end game.

Check Metacortechs, Ny Takma, Mei Geist, Sammeeeees, Monster Hunter Club, Urban Hunt as they all reached a successful conclusion.

Imagine it's like when you reach the end of a book. There is some sort of closure for the characters (someone was found, someone was killed perhaps, some mystery was solved) and the players (did they complete the mission?). Sometimes there is a little air of mystery left over (what happened to so & so, is he still alive?) that suggests a possible sequel.
The exact same thing you find in literature or a movie.

The unsuccessful games just leave you hanging with a lot of players going "is this dead?" - or they were never ARGs to begin with (*cough* 1-18-08 *cough*).

I'm not sure there's such a thing as an average ARG Laughing

But yeah, pretty much what they already said - some ARGs get solved and the story all ties up nicely, some end solidly but leave questions about characters and/or situations (that may or may not be addressed in a sequel), some go out with an almighty bang, some with a fizzle (or even a whimper), and some just seem to disappear (leaving a "Huh? What just happened?" kind of feeling in their wake).

Some games do have prizes, either along the way or at the end. Sometimes they're swanky big prizes, sometimes smaller things but they're still fun to play for and get. You don't always know there might be swag when you start playing. I get the impression from these boards that a lot of people play for playing (and if they get goodies out of it that's a bonus), rather than playing the games because there's stuff to win.

I'm not sure any of that makes sense, but I hope it helps answer your query a bit Very Happy

Usually with severe symptoms of withdrawal and venturing back outside to teach your pupils how to dilate constrict effectively again.
