There's a bit of a logical flaw in something being behind them.
Those two faces are looking in the same direction, apparently at the same thing, in fear or terror. Why would two people be looking the exact same place if the object of their fear was behind them?
If that is an image of what they are afraid of it's likely a reflection of what they are looking at. The only likely way it isn't is if they are looking at a reflection, and they'd almost certainly turn around to look at it directly. We do see a light source reflected in their eyes, and in darkness looking towards the major light source you won't see much if anything in the way of reflections of what's behind you. If what we see between them were a reflection, we should see it in reflected in their eyes as well.

If there is an object meant to be there between them, the graphic artist that put it there made some serious mistakes.

I don't know how yall can say it's not overly visible when I saw the pic that was the first thing I saw I assumed that it was part of the pic

In all honesty, it was the first thing I noticed as well. And this was before anyone had written about the "demon" in the picture. It stands out quite a bit to be sure. If it is a fluke, it's a one in a million one.

My biggest problem with it being an "optical illusion" is that even if it just so happened to have been coincidence, they take a crap load of photos and pick the best. You don't think anyone noticed it when they picked it to be used. They put it there...come on now.
