415-555-5555

i got a weird phone call tonight from the number 415-555-5555. when i answered it was just static, so i listen to it for a few seconds and then just hung up. i searched the area code and it came up San Francisco.

that got me wondering, given the location and the weird phone number, and that i have given out my # for future ARGs.

i don't think this is anything at all, just want someone to maybe explain why i got this freakin phone call. something rationale.

unless it is an ARG, which is doubtful.

i'm seriously stressing out, lol.

I'm not sure how one goes about spoofing the caller-ID system, but I can confirm the number is fake. ARG or not.

Edit: Guess I should read the Wikipedia page before I post it all "knowing"like.
I guess 555-0100 through 555-0199 are the only fictional numbers, now as the rest of the range is being released for "normal" use in many area codes.

Edit2: Or, one of your friends is pranking you.

If you do a search on Youtube it turns out that it is some kind of viral marketing for Criss Angel (the illusionist) promoting his show "Midfreak".

You can see the clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG0bUxiv3Ik

I know where it is from. If you go to Criss Angel's A&E website http://www.aetv.com/criss_angel/ and you go to "freak your friends", there is a place where you can put in your friends name and their phone number and then you email them a special link. When they get the link, it takes them to a video of Criss Angel "freaking their mind" and it rattles off their name and he pulls cards out of a deck in the sequence of the phone number that was entered on the site. At the end of it he says "keep your phone handy" or something like that. Then within a couple of minutes, your phone rings with the static and windy sound. The number that came up on our caller ID was the 415-555-5555 and the name on the ID said "CALIFORNIA". The only reason I found your number was because I googled the number after the call just to see if it linked to any business name, etc, just for curiousity.

So, somebody must have entered your cell phone number as the number (obviously in error, because you hadn't received the email, etc). That is why you got the call.

415-555-5555 = Criss Angel

Just to confirm what mom22paynes said, this happened to me today. A friend put me name/number on that mindfreak link. Rolling Eyes

It wasn't long afterward, my cell phone rang with this 555 number and that same static.

555-555 brought me flashbacks to the Wyoming Incident.

Oh, yeah. What's the visualizer for sound-to-image called? Run the static through that.

I've found out that the static only comes through when the name of the person you're sending it to isn't in their list of names.

I got the same call because of Criss Angel. Except that I didn't pick up.. so I just watched it ring... and it left me a nice little voice mail full of static. I listened to it a couple of times to see if was somebody actual trying to get through just with really baad reception.. but it was nothing. Ohs well.
