Video series following Master Chief, starting Sept 14
first video releases today: "Museum" via games.yahoo.com

http://2opgaming.com/2007/09/12/halo-3-marketing-blitz-with-new-movies/

Quote:
On Sept. 25, "Halo 3's" epic hero Master Chief will rise once again – he'll face seemingly insurmountable odds with the entire fate of the galaxy riding on his shoulders. In memory of this hero, and helping build to what promises to be the largest entertainment launch in history on Sept. 25, a series of dramatic and evocative communications elements, created by McCann San Francisco, T.A.G., AKQA, and Microsoft Global Marketing will offer a stirring look at the "Halo" universe and Master Chief.
The first of the films, entitled "Museum," premieres today on http://games.yahoo.com and provides consumers everywhere with a reason to "Believe" in the amazing stories and action within the Halo experience, bringing the epic battles to life in the style of a museum "diorama."

emphasis mine

First 'diary' called Museum available from http://games.yahoo.com
Download link (26MB)

I post this because of the bolded portion - it includes AKQA, so while it may or may not be at all related to Iris specifically, it's a side-story like Iris, and should hopefully prove to be quite interesting and revealing.

Cool.

I think this guy's response is pretty accurate...

Quote:
And then there's this ad. This ad is much bigger than Halo. Emotionally bigger, and almost too big at that. But at the same time, it shows a certain connection fans of the game have with Halo. The connection is bigger than the game, and this spot, which features a veteran of Halo's fictional war visiting a museum, pays homage to that.

Another person commented about how this is not a good ad to be running considering the current war situation and similarity to 'religious fanatics invading and attacking our home'... etc... making use of veterans (or that theme) to further video game advertising.
*shrug*

It demonstrates how great Halo - the franchise, not just the video game - truly is. Depending on the taste Halo 3 leaves in everyone's mouths, and how the spinoffs coming in the future (RTS, comics, novels, shorts, and more, certainly, on top of past spinoffs) are received, I'd definitely say Halo could be this generation's Star Wars or Star Trek. It just needs to fully (the franchise, not the video games) break out of the MS/Xbox mold to be more widely accepted. There are still non-Xbox gamers who only know about the video game, and galk at people who love Halo so much because they don't understand Halo is so much bigger than the video game Smile Lots of potential for the movie... *cough*

I thought that this ad was extremely emotional and very cool.

I couldn't agree more.

he was probably contacted to remove it if it was really leaked early. Assuming this is the one coming tomorrow, I won't bother posting it again... I'm sure it's out there somewhere else anyway right now.

Wow... I wasn't at all expecting that. It fits well with the emotional approach MS is taking towards this launch campaign, but I'm not too sure yet whether I love it or not...

This also applies to essentially every non-Bungie/MS marketing campaign out there. So don't worry, this advert has no effect on the story of Halo 3.

I have to agree with the emotional things, its a very cool thing. I just watched the announcement trailer again and thought to myself "It makes the chief even more kick@$$ that hes not even doing it for the fame, hes doing it because hes a soldier and wants to save the human race"
Anyways, I love these ads, they are really great.

to quote...
Quote:
I asked Frankie about the concept, if they were worried about the reaction it would get from fans of the game. If people might think the ads are spoilers. He said that the ads were created by a marketing team who had no idea how the game ends and that it is not meant to be part of the game's canon.

'not canon' is different than 'not part of the game's canon'. This just means that the ads don't touch on aspects of the game, not that the ads aren't official or endorsed by Bungie as a part of the grand story of the Halo universe... ie, it's not that the diorama is adding anything new - it isn't, it's just demonstrating more detail on what's already canon history, though not specifically related to Halo 3.

The way I see it, there's the Halo Bible - the Halo canon, what's official. Then there are games, campaigns, ads, fanfic, comics, novels, etc - these are either initially endorsed and add information that becomes canon, or they're made and eventually are accepted into canon, or they simply describe in more detail what's already canon. (or they're completely ignored and just accepted as non-official fan-made spinoffs =P)

- Iris, to my understanding is canon.
- ILB was not canon, but eventually became generally accepted as part of the official universe (still fuzzy on 'how' official it is as per the Halo Bible)
- Believe is a campaign that details what's already canon (but stays away from the video game for spoilers - not 'video game canon')

that's how I see these...
