trailhead launch date

more of a discussion starter (I hope anyway) than a straightforward question, but I'm planning on launching an ARG I've been working on and off on bits of for about a year and then more solidly over the last month or so.

I'm aiming for a November launch, which is what I've told the sponsors anyway, but maybe possibly sooner if it's ready.

The point of this thread tho is this, is it probably a good idea to launch a trailhead to coincide with the conclusion of a big ARG?
That is with the idea that there will be lots of players suddenly cold turkey and looking for another ARG? or maybe they would want a rest and a week or so later would be more effective? Are some times of year better than others? i was thinking of aiming at christmas holidays time, the ARG should take no longer than a few months.

Or am i just thinking too much into it and should just launch whenever as a quality ARG should stand out regardless of how many other current games are running?

There tend to be a lot of launches in the New Year and in the Summer, at least from what I've seen. A Fall or Spring launch may be an easy way to get our game to 'stand out.'

However, if the ARG is high-quality, people will play it--even if there are lots of other games going on at the same time.

Can't talk for other people, but for me the starting date isn't as important as the first impression. Most people here probably take a look at all the new trailheads posted in news & rumors. If their first impression of your ARG is good, they'll find time (I know I will Smile )

public holidays: Sad Don't start on any major holiday. yes we have time off work but time gets eaten by other things. and forget any date after 15th of December just start in the new year.

weekends: Smile i myself have more time at the weekend to look throw ARG stuff [like trailheads]. so if you send out the rabbits hole on Friday you may get more players as we look over it weekend. if you start mid week you may have people find the rabbits hole but forget about it as there snowed in at work.

that about the only help i can give you about this but as every ones said if it good you will get players.

dates as a gimick sometimes work too...

7 July 2007

any Friday the 13th

Halloween if you're running a spooky ARG

a particular day in the year which the number of the day of that year matches something important...

but those are just gimmicks which may get people talking. When I ran Ny Takma we used a Friday 13th gimmick which happened to fall on a particularly numbered day which some people at some conspiracy site were tying in with the apocolypse and some comet that may hit the earth around that time (I hadn't seen that about the comet, but posting a video on youtube with the earth blowing up ... well that helped to fuel that debat LOL)

The only circumstance where launch date is important is if someone else starts a better one at the same time Confused

So just go for it!
