Interview with Krystal Blanc

by, Melody Heller, AmboyMonthly.com

I had an opportunity to talk to Krystal Blanc about her recent ordeal. She was mock kidnapped as part of a test for Ideltech applicants. The false kidnapping turned into a real one, with another actor, Joseph Palser, holding her against her will. I thought it best for Ms. Blanc to share her story in her own words.

Amboy Monthly: Hello Krystal, I have heard so much about you that I feel I should know you. Thank you for agreeing to speak with me.

Krystal Blanc: You're welcome Melody. Thank you for the opportunity to tell everyone thanks for helping to rescue me.

AM: Could you give us a little background on how you got involved with Ideltech?

KB: I was hired by Mr. Carey for what he called a novel interview process. There would have been some contact set up with the applicants by Mr. Carey and the company he was assisting, Ideltech. At a certain point, I and another actor, Mr. Palser, would begin traveling around the country leaving clues for the applicants to find. We would either mail postcards, or send an e-mail from a cyber café, or make a phone call from somewhere. As I understood it, the applicants would be scored on who could identify the most locations that we visited. We would go places like the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Mesa Verde where the Anasasi ruins are, Yellowstone National Park. I agreed to it, I mean I was getting an all expense paid vacation, who wouldn't agree to that?

AM: A lot of people were very worried about you when you didn't check in with them when you arrived in Portland to see the Professor.

KB: I knew they had set up some of the ground work for my character, but I hadn't known what a good job they would do. On the one hand, I can see how upset they might be because of the test set up for the applicants. On the other hand, if they hadn't been looking for me so hard, who knows what might have happened to me. I am very, very grateful for the work they did that allowed the police to find me.

AM: I see. So you and Mr. Palser started out on the trip?

KB: Joe, ah, Mr. Palser, suggested that we could rent a car locally and drive as it would seem more realistic. We could even send out postcards from some of the hotels we stayed at. Well the only place locally to rent a vehicle was the heavy equipment place. All they had was this beat up work van. We got on the road and things were going well. At a rest stop a pill bottle fell out of Joe's pocket, and I picked it up and gave it to him. The look he gave me was just awful. He got very defensive about it. Yelled about me prying into his personal life.

AM: And that was when it started?

KB: He seemed to be ok the first couple of days, but then he started talking about TOBI being a monster prying into people's lives. He found out that Dr. Roddington had lost his position at U of O. He started talking about how that must have made him feel, having your life ruined like that. Of course we didn't know at the time that Dr. Roddington was part of Ideltech.

AM: So he started obsessing over what the professor might have gone through?

KB: Yes, it got a bit worse every day. I tried to call Nash to let him know, but Joe took my cell phone away. Things were ok until I tried to use a pay phone in a restaurant. He came running over and pulled me away from it, took me out to the van and tied me up in the back with some electrical cord that was in there. I was very scared, and I thought that no one even knew I was missing. My family were all told they might be contacted by people and to just play along. He kept playing these Andrew Lloyd Webber tapes. I got sick of hearing them day in and day out. If I never hear another song from Phantom of the Opera, it will be too soon.

AM: Was the first video taken before or after you realized he had perhaps gone a bit too deep into his character?

KB: Well, Joe took a little video of me in the bathtub in this motel we stayed at with a paper, of course that was one of the things we had talked about with Nash and Ideltech. He wasn't too bad yet, but it was beginning to show.

AM: How did you come up with the symbol on your hand for the second video?

KB: I just got plain lucky. We stopped for lunch next to a used book store, and I told Joe I was going to get a few to keep me occupied while we were traveling. I happened to pick up the book "The fortune teller's Mah jongg", which was published in 1988. I study lots of different belief systems and hadn't found much on Mah jongg. When I learned that we were going to go to Phoenix after we stopped in Las Vegas, and he was going to make the second video right on schedule, I used my liquid eyeliner to paint the symbol on my hand. I hoped someone would recognize it.

AM: Then you managed to get the e-mail out?

KB: Joe had fallen asleep in front of the computer, My hands and feet were tied up, but he forgot to tie me to the chair. I managed to turn his laptop around and get the message out to as many people as I could before he woke up. When he did I just sent it to however many people I managed to get from his list.

AM: Can you tell us a bit about the day you were rescued?

KB: Joe had chained me to a heater and went to get some food for the trip. I am not certain how they figured out we were at that hotel, but they came in while Joe was gone. They untied me, talked to me. Joe never came back. I don't know if he meant to leave me there, or if he might have seen a police car outside and took off.

AM: So they haven't caught him yet?

KB: No they haven't.

AM: So what is next on your schedule?

KB: Well, I am going home with my husband, and we are going to go stay with other relatives for a bit.

AM: Is there anything else you would like to add?

KB: Yes, I just want to say thank you to all the people who worked hard to find me, I am very very grateful. Especially to Pat Carson and Brian Enigma if it wasn't for them finding out about the van and stuff, I might still be tied up and traveling with Joe.

AM: Thank you for your time Ms. Blanc

KB: Thank you for the opportunity to share my story.
