It is, thankfully, a straight checkerboard cipher:

Here's how I broke it down:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
a numbers secret, a story untold, telling stories
of days old ... associate numbers with letters ... see how you do the reduction of C6H5NO2 with a little cniz and crystalization what do you get?

What the heck is 'cniz'?

how did you solve that?

C6H5O2 is isonicotonic acids like ethionamide, iproniazid, isoniazid, and most commonly nialamide.

Most of them are used in drugs for the treatments of depression and alcoholism, although ethionamide is used in treating tuberculosis.

cniz is zinc spelled backward, and the reduction of C6H5O2 gets you phenylhydroxylamine, when in the presence of NH4Cl

It appears in the form of crystallized yellow needles.

Here are the Wikipedia pages for C6H5NO2, NH4Cl, and phenylhydroxylamine.

C6H5NO2 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isonicotinic_acid

NH4Cl - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NH4Cl

C6H5NHOH - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylhydroxylamine

Checkerboard works like this:

Code:

X 1 2 3 4 5
1 a b c d e
2 f g h i k
3 l m n o p
4 q r s t u
5 v w x y z

Each letter gets matched to a pair of numbers -- A, for instance, is 11, and then B is 12. I and J are both mapped to 24. There's also a 6x6 version that lets you encode numbers.

So I built this table in Notepad, copied the strings of numbers, and converted. It's easy to spot -- number strings that don't have the numbers 6-0. =] But it can be tricky as well, because you can add in a keyword at the beginning. This one was just a straight encryption though.

Sadly, C6H5NO2 appears to be the chemical compound for more than one thing:
Nitrobenzene: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrobenzene
Niacin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niacin

EnvironmentalChemistry.com reports that nitrobenzene has an "incompatibility" with zinc ... and since we tend to be skewing towards Wild Western things, maybe this is some sort of explosives?

The answer to the most recent clue has to be either emailed or IM'ed to folded.

nitrobenzene is reduced with zinc to make azo-benzene. Nitrobenzene can also be reduced -- with nickel in modern times but I saw some old reference with zinc -- to make aniline . These have both been used to make dyes or as dyes.

The formula would also work for Niacin, but I'm not sure what would happen if you reduced it with zinc.

Edit: I missed Adam C's post above. That will work as well depending on your conditions to get Phenylhydroxylamine.

Niacin is C6H6O2, not H5. Not that it really matters, but just to avoid any confusion.

I couldn't find much on phenylhydroxylamine, other than what was on wiki, for its common uses and such.

The wiki link that I quoted must be wrong, then, as it lists that compound in the article.

isonicotonic just means isomer of nicotonic, nicotonic acid is, essentially, niacin...

i was just clarifying that they're two seperate, albeit very very similiar, compounds
