EMAIL: New IM service is here! (4/30) Straight from the horse's mouth:

You get the first tip. We are sending emails in the next hour which will be
our new IM system.
Hehheh
EDIT: Even as we speak, this from Jude:

This just in from Marcus!
Thanks Jude
After much debate we have decided to use a free service for IMing. The service we were looking into did not offer technical support past 5 pm, and wanted money each time we called them. So we have gone with www.intellim.com. Please use the same name in your email address so I know whom I am speaking with without the use of the database. Your password is your choosing. Please do not give this information out. This system is not secure, but with less people using the service we are likely not going to run into many programs that can crack the unusual system. So, send me an IM. I used my email address as my login name too.

Ugh.
From intellim's privacy policy:
Quote:
Intellim works with various third parties to serve ads on our service, these ads may contain cookies. Intellim does not have control over, nor access to the information contained in the advertisers' cookies.
Sounds like adware to me. Perhaps even spyware.

Cookies are not really a component of ad/spy ware. They are only tags to mark a user when they return to a site.

However, the part about serving ads on their service (read the privacy policy quote again), makes the program adware.
Quote:
Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen. The justification for adware is that it helps recover programming development cost and helps to hold down the cost for the user.
Adware has been criticized for occasionally including code that tracks a user's personal information and passes it on to third parties, without the user's authorization or knowledge. This practice has been dubbed spyware and has prompted an outcry from computer security and privacy advocates, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

We have no idea if the program is using our internet connection to transmit information to those advertisers. Since we do know it's being collected, it's a real possibility.

Browsing around their site, it looks like they use Jabber as their IM protocol. If you are worried about the client being "evil," you could in theory use any Jabber client , as long as you knew what server to connect it to. They could be running their own server, or they could just be using the "official" one at jabber.org. Someone running the official Intellim client and who understands the netstat command might be able to shed some more light on this.
Edit : Both Colin and Lysithea confirm that the Intellim Jabber client is configured to connect to intellim.com. I am able to confirm that I can go to their download page, sign up for a new account, then use any ol' Jabber client (in this case, JabberFoX for OS X) and sign in with the information I provided to the web form on intellim.com (of course, changing the server from jabber.org to intellim.com). I can connect, but because I do not know anyone's account names, I have no idea who to send messages to and cannot 100% confirm that everything worked perfectly.

Damn you Win98! Hey guys,
Some of you who were in IRC yesterday might know that I had a complete nightmare trying to make the s/w run on my crappy ol' P450 with Win98. It was crashing the system the second I double clicked it, dumping me into safe mode and all that trauma. I contacted the support dept for IntellIM and they replied as follows (just in case anyone is in the same situation, even though I've not heard anyone is ):
Quote:
Hello, If you can open the program try this:
Click on the “Tools” menu.
Click “Options…”.
Click the arrow to the right of “Secure SSL”.
Select “Standard” from the list that appears.
Click OK.
If that does not work try using this version.

It is good to know I'm not the only person still using win98. I did manage to get Intellim working (but only after pressing the reset button on my computer a few times).
Just in case anyone is looking for the installer that will allow dsclient.exe to be opened in win98, instructions can be found at Microsoft support . Scroll down to the 'Download the DSClient package now' link. (but you do need to have installed the msi update for win98 from microsoft first)
Having said that, I wish I'd known about the 9x version of Intellim and I am seriously wondering if it is the best option.

Brian, thanks for your work on this. Great ideas! (I quoted the entire thing in case someone missed your edit.) I guess once the wiki list of the account names is up, you'll have the opportunity to test your alternative client. Curious to know how it works.
Thanks again.

I have Win 98, on a 6 year old computer. I will be upgrading if I can ever get far enough ahead with my finances.

I read Brian and Dia's post about using Jabber instead of Intellim. And Marcus told me that's what he uses now instead of Intellim. But how do you change the server from Jabber.com/org to Intellim? When I go to the options page to change it, the server/host is not open to change. Any suggestions please??
Thanks!!

Exactly what Jabber Client are you trying to use?

It's this one. When I checked the properties, this is what it said:
File Version: 6.00.2600.0000 (xpclient.010817-1148)
And under About Jabber Messenger it says: Jabber Messenger 2.7.5.3.
Hope this helps. And thank you.
