[SPEC]MINOTAUR? Think I figured this thing out!

I started following links regarding minotaurs since that's the popular word around here lately. Link after link, and using Minotaur+Japan on google. found myself at the following wikipedia entry. It specifies three japanese folklore monsters, one of which is.. A MINOTAUR. couple that with another being a sea monster and MAYBE???

i am only using the clues that have already been given to make a somewhat educated guess...

sea monster (the wake in the water)

minotaur (the latest artwork from the photobucket account)

i could be way off but only if the clues aren't valid to lead me to this guess

If it is one of these things, my bet is on this one. It has three claws, alongside of one extra talon, perfect for making that extra scratch on the Statue of Liberty.

But minotaurs aren't sea monsters! They're bull headed creatures that live in labyrinths!

Not in Japanese mythology. Ushi-Oni come from everywhere, especially water, since Japan is an island nation.

Here's a statue of the Negoro. Kind of resembles the SOL.

First off, sorry for earlier and anything afterwards... I do come off a lot like a jerk if an idea seems unlikely to me." Sad

I took a look at the statue and picture, and that's pretty weird... imagine a version of "Theseus and the Minotaur" using the Ushi-Oni rather than the more traditional part man/part bull Minotaur. Smile

My skepticism is down to a few reasons:
1) Where exactly did the reference of a minotaur crop up? Eonblue didn't list a source from any of the sites that are considered in-game aside from Jamie's Photobucket... and it doesn't really look like a Minotaur.
2) I feel this movie is going to take a less fantastical approach to monster movies, so as ironic as it is to dismiss one monster from another because it's 'less realistic'... a minotaur
3)I hadn't seen much mention of a Minotaur until this topic.

It just seems to be a case of having an idea, and then trying to find the evidence to support it.

Okay, I've seen the statue and picture and yes, they have a Minotaur's head...

But where did mention of Minitaur first come from? He didn't list a source from any of the sites that are considered in-game and it seems one of the less likely monsters from the list of creatures that've been suggested since the trailer came out. All he says is 'the popular word today' as the justification, and then mentions Wikipedia which is hardly the peak of academic excellence.

It just seems to be a case of having an idea, and then trying to find the evidence to support it.

Ah, thanks for the link pegassissy. Smile

eonblue, thanks for linking it although I had taken a look earlier. It's a pretty weird image but unless someone can find the full uncropped version then it might be an accident that it looks like a Minotaur. And assuming it's a minotaur because someone says 'is that a minitaur?' seems a poor conclusion, especially from a report with questionable authenticity.

I'm just naturally sceptical. Razz

I am sceptical by nature too, but JJ Abrams saying he and his kid were looking at toys in a toy store in japan and then people talking about a potential sea monster and then the minotaur thing --- oni oshi seems to be a popular character(s) for toys in japan, i dunno, my theory doesnt seem any worse than OMG ITS A LION

True, but but people took his Japanese reference to mean that Godzilla was a potential candidate.

And don't get me started on the lion. Razz Wink

But Godzilla isn't popular in Japanese toy stores any more, these Oni Oshi characters and whatnot are -- i think a lot of card games in japan have them in them too

i dunno, we will find out eventually
