"Ushi-oni, like many youkai, are thought to be reasonable as long as they are respected. But if they are crossed, their fury is terrible indeed.

As always, respect and honor are the key to dealing with these powerful beings."[/i]

perhaps drilling down into the ocean and disturbing their habitat (perhaps to get ingredients for slusho or whatever) has angered the monster(s)

So, the given clues were heading towards some 'natural' or 'mutated' phenomenon caused by the discovery of an undersea ingredient and the excesive drilling. The sound and many other clues point out to be whale-ish. Almost all speculation is about either a mutated whale or some forgotten creature of the sea. An apparently slight addictive product is involved...

And then some guy says he was an extra without any kind of backup, and that some other extra was told to say the word minotaur, and now the speculation is that the monster is some ancient Japanese deity?!

What would an Oni had to do with slusho? with whales? with drilling? Do you really think it would be a good movie if 'disturbing nature by drilling slusho' caused the old japanese demons to get angry with NYC?!

This is getting way out of control people.

You're looking too deep into the 'Japanese' aspect of it. She said 'Is that a minotaur?' not 'Is that an Ushi-oni?' The monster may resemble and Ushi-oni, but it doesn't have to be one straight-up.

Basically, the monster COULD be an Ushi-oni, or it could be anything else, it just so happens Ushi-oni fits the Japanese view of things.

But didn't Abrams said that Japan already had their monster and this would be yours (ours? I'm not american and I don't know what he meant). It wouldn't make sense to base the creature on a japanese shape if this was going to be the not japanese monster.

I have to say that Arkahams right, all previous speculations, theories and such have almost been completely disbanded for this new japanese minotaur. What about the whale references? What about all the slow developments of ideas that the monster was awakened by drilling and that it was related to the secret ingredient. Not to mention, I doubt a new yorker would call most of those beats 'minotaurs'.

i think JJ seemed a little confused and almost nervous when he spoke at Comicon

I don't know if it is going to be a truly original monster

Is any monster truly original?

Except of course, the flying spaghetti monster.

Wasn't House of Leaves mentioned in one of the MySpaces or something? In that book, the word minotaur comes up fairly frequently and (in certain versions of the book) every instance of the word is colored red.

Don't know if that means anything at all, but there you go.

The monster may not be a minotaur (I mean, c'mon... will Rob kill it using Medusa's head while riding atop Pegasus? Or, maybe someone will fashion some wax wings...); BUT, the word "minotaur" might be some kind of clue, or figure into a cypher somehow. Put it on the list with "cornbread." Rolling Eyes

Aye, truer words have never been spoken.

Except that 'cornbread' was given by a charcter on a IG site. Minotaur was given by the friend of the friend of an extra who posted here once.

Who is getting chased through the city about to get crushed and says "Oh snaps is that a minotaur?" Not only do i think that 1% of new yorkers even know what a minotaur is, but if i'm going to die i'm not thinking of how awesome it is that i'm going to die by a minotaur.
Not that i don't believe this densieb character...more that if this happened, i think jj is going to have it cut so that the line isn't even in the movie (just to screw with these extras) or the name/species of the monster is able to line up with the pronunciation of "is that a minotaur."

Ushi-oni

Obviously the Ushi-oni is only a myth, but suppose the myth were based on a real creature that the ancient Japanese could only be described as a bull/crab monster.

When the human mind is confronted with something too far outside its scope to comprehend, it will latch onto any common element to explain it.

Remember that European sailors mistook manatee for mermaids, and the native people of the Americas, upon seeing European ships for the first time, described them as moving islands (with the masts appearing as trees to them), so it's not such a crazy idea.

So, the Japanese saw a bull/crab, while a New Yorker saw a minotaur.

i don't think that a minatour is the monster. The extra who posted on this forum is a hoaxer i think. Anyone could say what she said.

I don't think it will be any monster recorded to date whether it be myths or entertainment. It will probably be a creation of JJ Abrams or one of this artists.

thats my thoughts anyway
