Men of Metal promotion for BMW Has anyone done any poking around the "Men of metal" promotion for BMW/mini-cooper? Given BMW's history with ARG stuff, it seems like there might be something behind the new Men of Metal campaign; besides the pretty cool (fake) "excerpt from upcoming book" insert in Rolling Stone, auto mags, National Geographic Adventure mag, etc, the following related web sites so far:
http://www.r50rd.co.uk/research/internal/v2i/engin/
http://uk.geocities.com/colinmayhewphd
http://www.cassonpublishing.co.uk/currentfav.html
http://members.lycos.co.uk/rowlandsamuel/
And a couple of email addresses:
colinmayhewphdSPLAT yahoo.co.uk
rowland_samuelSPLAT lycos.co.uk
...the first of which gives a "jolly good, I'm on holiday, cheerio, write you soon" kind of autoresponse.
Can't tell yet if there's "stuff to do" or just poking around....

men of metal You gotta love the whole idea of turning a mini-cooper into a transformer-like robot. This is great! Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention.

men of metal can someone please post a .txt or .html version of the excerpt of this book. The .pdf file is huge and people on dialup have to take forever to get it. Thanks. http://www.cassonpublishing.co.uk/currentfav.html
Oh, by the way...Steve...do you still have that chess piece?

Slashdot posted about the mini-cooper humanoid project about a month ago, but as a legitimate (Read: non fiction) story... haven't gone through the whole thread yet, I am assuming eventually they caught on? Here's the link: http://slashdot.org/article.plsid=04/03/09/222227&mode=thread&tid=159&tid=186

Hello all. seems BMW has an excellent ad company. Why is the robot obviously computer generated? My brother sent me the "excerpt" book and I would like to be able to tell him as well as I am curious myself.

fake? This very well could be fake ... I learned long ago not to believe most of what you see online. But if it is a hoax, what is the point? They are not trying to sell BMW's or Mini-Coopers. Also, the video clip from the www.r50rd.co.uk ... etc website doesn't look computer generated to me. The shadows are too realistic (I know ... that can be faked, too) ... I just don't see what the point would be to creating such an elaborate hoax and not mentioning any products in it.

I got the impression that by going on about how over-engineered the Mini was we were supposed to be impressed enough to buy it. I was definitely impressed, but, unfortunately, a Mini looks to be out of my budget for quite a while! I'm pretty sure that this is definitely a BMW ad campaign.
