Troll-player

Troll-player

A person who would be considered a troll (for attempting to interfere with an ARG) by pretending to be a character in the game via unauthorized role-playing.

Some good fun early in the AI game was had while trying to figure out who set up homage sites in the AI universe - some even answered the mail but did not otherwise try to interfere in the game. So not trolls, but with great potential to confuse. Nonetheless they added to the depth of the experience, and I would not like to see things get so regimented that spontaneous stuff like that couldn't happen. I would reserve troll for people actively trying to pull the game offtrack and harm players.

Agreed!

I also like to remember this great guy from the LockJaw days (and a brief appearance in CTW). He was not BTS and he did nothing to harm the game. He just had some good clean fun with it as did some of the players. While he wasn't intent on hiding his true identity, I don't recall him actively coming out of the closet with his identity to everyone in the beginning (though most eventually knew... esp when SpaceBass changed his IRC nick to SpaceJanitor Wink). Come to think of it, Space didn't just create a player completely from scratch, he took a minor mention from one of the game sites and built it up into something much more. Could he have derailed the game? Perhaps. However, we did eventually fire the janitor and Space wrote a nice piece on how it was time to move on.

Honestly, as a PM, it was great fun to watch and was an honor that the players were so enamored with our game as to create fan fiction.

Troll should definitely be reserved for people acting maliciously.
