In Memoriam

I don't know if anyone here heard about In Memoriam awhile back, but it was a Majestic-type game that came out in Europe. It claimed to have over 100 puzzles, 300 websites and interactive characters.

I don't know if it was a success or if it was any good, but they are now releasing it in the U.S. under the name Missing. I got this in my GameDAILY newsletter the other day...

Quote:
Adventure Co. Finds Title for NA [5/7/2004 12:02:39 PM ET]

The Adventure Company has announced plans to publish the PC game Missing in North America.

Already released in Europe as In Memoriam, the Lexis Numérique-developed title will have players investigating the abduction of a journalist who was looking into a string of "gruesome" murders.

The game is due out this summer and will be rated "M" (Mature).

From the Missing site...

Quote:
Features:

Enter the mind of a serial killer and see if you can unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of a journalist and his companion and the recent ghastly murders.

Missing offers an innovative blend of Windows® gameplay and the internet to immerse players in this elaborate game of cat-and-mouse.

Receive actual e-mail from virtual characters and The Phoenix himself offering important clues.

Visit a wealth of real websites and fictitious sites created solely for the game to obtain valuable information vital to solving the case.

There was a thread last year about it, but not much action was taken on it.

I actually played and finished it. It was a combination of web searching, puzzles and some silly action sequences.

It was quite linear.

You would get emails from characters in the game (usually supposedly other people that were playing the game with you). if you took too long on a puzzle, you would get an email that would provide a hint or two.

Most of the websites that were used, were quite professional looking.

I played it as well. I thought it was entertaining. Some of the web searches were tricky, although anyone who played the game now would be googling a lot of sites containing walkthroughs for the game. Confused I don't remember there being anywhere close to 300 in-game websites, although the one's they did create were well done.

I thought some of the arcadey mini-games in the game to be quite unique, especially one in particular. The game is pretty buggy though. I had no issues, but I think I was the exception.

Well, hopefully this will be a decent game. I'll probably buy it just to try it out and give it a review.

I really, really liked Syberia by Adventure Company, but others really sucked. I think Dracula: The Last Sanctuary was one of the worst games I've ever played. I've also had some trouble getting some of their other games to run correctly. When I ran the video game store, I'd say 3 out of 5 Adventure Company games that I sold got returned because they didn't run right on the customer's computer. I even rented the games (yes rented, we got to rent the games for free) and tried to run them myself and I didn't have much luck. I think this was back when many were using ME and XP had just come out though so it may have been a driver issue with the new OS's. Hopefully, they have fixed this since then.

(Edited to correct the name of the drac game.)

Varin, I am a *huge* adventure game fan. Laughing Have you tried Syberia 2 yet? What about Longest Journey?

Regarding TAC (The Adventure Company), they are getting a hugely bad reputation for putting out buggy games. Games that just won't run on a lot of PC's! Worst of all, they really don't seem like a give a hoot. One of the worst run tech support groups out there. Their newest release, Forever Worlds, is an absolute fiasco of bugginess. Hardly anyone can get it to play right.

Longest Journey is one of my favorite adventure games ever. I just saw a couple of weeks ago that Syberia 2 was out on the shelves and haven't gotten it yet. Is it as good as the first was?

It's such a shame because there aren't really that many companies that are still making adventure games.

Ya know, I haven't played Syberia 2 either as it's been a busy time. So, I'm going off of reports of other players who's views ranged from the highly ecstatic to the somewhat of a "more of the same" kind of letdown. It seems that anyone who loved the first one will find the continuation of the story irresistible.

You're right, TAC is the last *big* company to still be financing adventure games besides Ubisoft. Luckily for me, there are still a lot of the classics of the genre I have not played yet! Laughing
