[OOG/SOCIAL] "speculation"

Is it just me or does it seem like the cloverfield thing is full of gamejacks.... it's kind of uninteresting to even follow it anymore Sad

Why do people gamejack anyway?

Well, this is a personal rant more than anything else, but I think ARG is not for everyone. First there's the patience issue. You need a lot of that. Every ARG has days when no clue comes up. Moments where some puzzle seems unsolvable or when simply nothing is happening at all. And then when something do comes up, is no answer to the big questions that are driving you crazy with curiosity, they're new questions.

Then there's the attention issue. There are a lot of people playing. Some manage to solve some clues and get attention and suddenly they're part of this awsome story you're immersing into. And sometimes you just can't catch up. You don't get the mail, you don't solve the puzzle, your spec turns out to be way off the target, you can't help to feel ignored.

And that's why I say is not for everyone. Someone well suited for ARGing takes a deep breath and waits. A big clue will come soon. The story may move tomorrow. The next puzzle may be my puzzle. I may get the next important mail. Those who are not for this will get crazy frustated: "Damn these PMs, they're stalling or ignoring me, I'm not having fun, they're doing things wrong. But everyone loves them. Damn everyone, they think they're so smart. I could trick them. I could outsmart even the PM, it's easy, I'll just fake a mail to prove everyone they're not so smart. I'll make up a site and they'll drool over, and everything will advance. Damn I'm smart."

Of course there are some not so evil ones. People who just wanted to see if they could fake a site to test their photoshop skill, and suddenly things get out of control and they must choose, keep the lie or enrage a mob of fellow players. And the ones who just wanted a quick jest at the expense of others.

And with an ARG like Cloverfield, with a major motion picture behind, you'll drag in tons of people. It's impossible not to drag those not suited for ARGs along with the good players. Insanity will surely follows. All we can do is have patience with them too and take the task of cutting the bad weed out as part of the game.

People gamejack for the same purpose as trolling.

And I noticed that Unfiction members are flaming a whole lot more on the board, and there's newbies coming in and thinking they're superior to the vets around here.

The "old timer" unFiction members aren't flamers. I've noticed its from an influx of new folks who haven't done much with the traditional ARGs but mostly found uF from googling for the movie info. They have to register to uF in order to post in the Cloverfield forum now (cause the guest post noise was ridiculous).

I thinks it's from boredom, the desire to be worshipped, to be popular, to get attention from the masses, to play a joke or prank, to have their secret laugh at other's expense (the 21st century version of a bully?).

Now, back to our regularly scheduled EE ARG. Did you see the new website found Sunday morning?

Don't get me wrong. I am not a big fan of anything or anyone slusho. but that's kind of a ridiculous attitude to have dude. There shouldn't be a "pecking order" to these things, and if someone thinks you're wrong, whether they're new here or not, they should totally feel free to call you on it.

nothing's lamer than throwing around the ever-present "n00b!" label.

for reals.

A lot of gamejacking can be avoided by design that makes it clear what is in game and what isn't. Also by having a game where something actually happens. Wink

People have different reasons for gamejacking - I wouldn't presume to guess them all. Some people, not me personally, consider the sites we call gamejacks to be "fan sites."

Just don't let it get you down.

I'm not sure I agree with this but Kona is right on when she said that registration is required to post in that forum. Just to be clear, the registration requirement was added as a direct response to one or two people who were maliciously attacking the board.

What? No. I'm on the Cloverfield area, and I'm about to give up on it. There's flaming and spam everywhere, and quite a lot of unnessecery attitude.

So, BOT. Who's going?
