SER-IH, what you're suggesting isn't confusing, it's just not plausible. You're suggesting that this game & movie will be interactive - that we will get to affect the outcome of the movie, depending on how we 'play the game' right now. But, the movie's been filmed - we cannot affect the outcome....

"Because it's written, that's why!"
- Brian's Mum, Life of Brian

But, yes, I agree 100% that we won't get to discover the monster until the movie comes out. However, this movie looks to be very realistic, so we won't get any backstory (about where the monster came from, why it 'decided' to attack NYC, etc.) in the actual movie. Hence, the GOAL of this 'game' is to discover and piece together all that backstory, based on the ARE/ARG elements they are feeding us here online. According to this view, the movie will be action-packed and will seem like something that could really happen; while, the online stuff can be as detailed and convoluted (and relatively fantastic) as they want to make it.

No, You're not confusing at all. It's more the tone of the statements. It's not a bad thing, but I thought it odd that they're put out there so as-a-matter-of-factly.

You go from saying you think not to knowing. No one here should know what the ultimate goal of the game/marketing is, not yet I guess. And exclude yourself from the rest of us by saying "Your guys's job".

Again, just tone, I'm not saying I disagree with anything you've said.

[EDIT]

Actually, after reading all of your posts (7 currently), you've been implying this whole time to some how know more than us.

Typically movies are a safe haven, you watch but you dont get hurt, your mind may explore the outcome but physically you exit the auditorium and transport yourself home to a safehaven where you curl up and reflect knowing that in the morning your hopefully not going to open the curtains to a scorched earth outlook.

So monster, yay, open the curtains and the first thing you see is a big eye looking in (aka tyro rex and kids in jeep with torch in Jurassic park) all girly scream together now.

Nope maybe not, perhaps this will be an exercise in psycology...

You wallk down the street and the house your passing has the door wide open the lights are on but no sound comes from the house...

Do you ( in good old infocom format - see tee shirt at gen con yakky dar!)

a. approach the door with caution!
b. grab a nearby stick and run in screaming come out mofo!
c. wait and watch?
d. call the police?
e. ask if anyone needs help?
f. walk on by!

you choose a.

Next you approach the door a squeak similar to the sound of a foot fall on a loose floorboard raises the hairs on the back of your neck..

do you etc etc.

only 3 outcomes to consider

1. You die the film ends with the world changing in favour of the beast/monster
2. The monster dies we all cheer and pat each other on the back for a job well done
3. The monster retreats and we all wonder where its gone and when will it come back, leaving us with questions to answer and speculate on.

My vote will be for 3, Abrams has had people hanging on for most of his directing career, its a time honored tradition to keep the money flowing, leave em wanting, so I suspect the monster whatever it is will shiver our nerve endings while submerging into the abyss to someday return and rekindle our fears.

For he ARGers! and perhaps for the viewers think of all the things that have no proofs, mysteries of history and there is JJ's playing field, could it be? might it happen? Is it so? perhaps its can! we may all leave the cinema feeling slightly in dread of the future.

BBBBLLLLaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhh! - cue ball of flame

Dammit all I love a good mystery.

I'm with ya'! And, I think your general option #2 would have the same effect as #3.

"2. The monster dies we all cheer and pat each other on the back for a job well done"

After we're done catching our breath and patting ourselves on the back, we'd look at the swath of destruction running through NYC that ends at the massive corpse of an animal we never even dreamed could exist, much less attack us. We'd have to start wondering... if it happened once, it can happen again; if one of these things can exist, there must also be others like it out there... "be afriad, be very afraid."

If it's outcome #2, then here's an idea for the sequel: it's another hand-held video of NYC being destroyed, but this time, it's because some genius decided to get rid of the corpse but stuffing it with dynamite and blowin' it up. Laughing Laughing It could be called "Reign of Blubber!"

Erm, isnt that your guys job. What I do know is that it's certainly not a plot/monster reveal. Thats the movies job. The reward for the "game" will be included within the film. (think video game cut sequence).

Ehh, you've got a point, ser-ih.
The movie HAS to have SOME kind of punch left in it -- so yeah, the Monster most likely will NOT show up at all in the viral (online) part of the guessing game. He/she/it will make a first appearance in the *movie.*

All due respect... DUH! Laughing

If we knew what the Monster looked like, it would kill the suspense of the film. Half the fun is that money shot (shut up, pervs), where, for the first time, we see the Monster face-to-face. I'm assuming the first scenes, we may see a large foot walking past up, and maybe a claw swiping here, but the Monster as a whole physically will be the thing that really pays off. So, yeah, you're right. I don't think they will reveal the monster pre-film.

What I do want them to do, though, is to hurry the heck up with this trailer and title. It's almost three months away, and we don't know what to call the darn thing.

Ah well. Patience is a virtue, I guess. Wink

Reading this thread led me to wonder......
Waht happens after the movie with the ARG(E).....since this is my first not sure, but I assume TLE is over but what happens when the sequel we assume is going to be made to "keep the money flowing" as it was put gets ready to come out.

Will they make a new ARG with some of the same elements or a completely new one or none at all?

Just curious Dunno

If they really wanted to milk this for all it's worth, they'd keep the ARG going (there's always more stuff to unravel when it comes to JJ abrams projects), and they'd also rush the DVD release, so that ARG players would run out and buy the DVD and analyze every frame, looking for hidden clues, etc.

Whether they'll do that or not... we'll just have to wait and see.

3) if it's biologically enhanced/mutated/created, there could be something in the altered DNA that gives it an extremely short lifespan (like the Replicants in "Blade Runner." I'd pay good money to see the Monster grab Ganu Yoshida by the neck and scream, "I want more life, f**ker!" Cool )

This is the one I'd like to see. A survival horror kind of story, where the characters know the monster will die as soon as the sun hits it, so they must try to reach morning alive, alone on a trashed city, with flawed evacuation plans and a big nasty monster looking for them.

brettoniasam wrote:

4) or, the monster really doesn't exist. It's all in somebody's mind. (I still believe wholeheartedly that this is gonna turn out to be like Vanilla Sky, or Fight Club, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.)

And as soon as they wake up someone tells them "That's what you get for chugging slusho at Rob's party"

SER-IH. You come here, say it's 'our' job to figure the things that are so obvious for you and drop this on the other thread:
Quote:
Looks like she won't be saved by YOU GUYS no more. Pity.
Don't worry though, it will get fixed in the "loop".

Are you serious?

Even in the remote case you did know somthing, you're being an ass. If you're JJ Abrams himself, then go away and don't spoil it for us. If you think you have this figured it out, then say so and we'll quickly point the flaws in your perfect deduction. If you hope to get people to beg you to tell us your 'magical answers' then just go away.

Noooo! and ruin all this wonderful conjecture and speculation Smile

I think generally everyone knows theres a monster, this is more then that, this is the cerebral challenge to beat the clock and unveil the true machinations of the dasterly sluthe other wise known as abrams and his cohorts.

How dare they spring a new monster on us, what evil designs do they have for the world, can we stop him before it gets out of control. Save the cheerleader save the eh! um! sorry wrong tack...

The funs in the finding out not the result, tease me I like it hehe.

Proof

Ok i think it's really odd nobody else has noticed this but! All the photos on 1.18.08.com are dated and timed and they all say their taken at night which agrees with the trailer right?? well in the OFFICIAL poster where the statue of liberty has no head... it's bright? And that means it lost its's head before any explosion(as seen in the trailer) and either the explosion launched the head or a pretty big monster did.. Or you know someone designing the poster really fucked up
