Except that the people involved that had to spend any time to fix anything cost money to their employers, not doing whatever was supposed to be planned for them to do during that time. Lost time is lost money. These people and that time lost and what it cost are not fictional.
The perspective you support would work better if you at least said the harm was negligible. That of course leaves it open to personal interpretation and debate - which I'm sure is not what supporters of that perspective want. Wink

Less than 24 hours to fix -- I'd say it was pretty negligible damage, yes. And how much does JJ pay his intern-slaves, $5 an hour? Laughing (kidding...I think Shocked )

It'd have to be more than that, the federal minimum wage is higher.

I thought interns worked for free for college credit?

This is the deal: an in-game site is an in-game site. It doesn't matter if it is owned by a third party or not.

I think this is overly simplistic. There is a very real difference between in-game sites (those created and wholly controlled by the puppetmasters) and in-game resources that are used by the puppetmasters but provided by third parties. Here, the difference should be starkly clear between jaimeandteddy.com and photobucket. Cracking a password on an established in-game site seems to me to fall under the initial invitation to participate in the fictional universe; I would personally want to see another very clear invitation to do something like this on a site that was owned by a third party. Even were such an invitation to be offered by the puppetmasters, what guarantee do we have that the third party owner has approved or endorsed it, or that they are even aware of it?

I do not agree with the suggestion that use of a third-party resource automatically inserts that entire resource into a game or campaign.

To put it another way, Unfiction is always out of game. Why is this? Because we explicitly enforce it as a part of our Terms of Service. Does this stop puppetmasters from trying to insert Unfiction into their games? No, they make attempts constantly. By your reasoning, a single successful attempt to insert an in-game element upon Unfiction would automatically make all of Unfiction in-game. Is this your intent?

To be clear, Unfiction in no way endorses or approves of any kind of cracking of sites or logins. If these are in-game actions that must be taken, that should be clear by the design. If it is unclear, then one who undertakes to proceed anyway necessarily assumes potential liability for their actions. Whether or not these actions have been invited implicitly or explicitly, unauthorized access of computers has been illegal in most places for a long time.

It's not up to the puppetmasters to regulate our actions and as we all know, we as a group are extremely resistant to attempts at control. Our individual actions are still our own choices.
