huh, that's funny, i never noticed that dawn thing before, very good point. I wonder if it means anything or if the fact that they're calling it a "teaser poster" has anything to do with it

Close but no cigar...

but as someone already noticed the poster is at dawn
it kinda looks like the monster left and came back for seconds in the poster
Except for the remnant debri falling from the SOL, I'd entertain the beast left the wake in the poster upon exiting the Big Apple after a long night of partying - helicopters surveying the damage left behind and the wrecked buildings wouldn't contradict it...
Damn you remnant debri !!

short theory time!!!!!
so the monster attacks then blah blah buildings falling, people dying blah blah... army then comes scares the monster so it leaves... then it comes back at dawn (it gets out of the water shaking the land around it causing more debri to fall from the SOL). Then it terrorizes some more....
OR
Its a teaser poster and they just dont like being consistent

Doesn't the explosion happen from the middle of the city? And it doesn't look too much like a missle explosion. Did we ever think about that maybe this monster is underground and coming up and maybe hit a gas line or something?
A gasline is discounted for the same reason that the main explosion is caused by a missile, it's way too big... even with Hollywood physics. The explosion itself seems to happen somewhere between City Hall Park and Battery Park (given that it appears behind some buildings and in front of others).
At the moment I believe (and I realise this is only based on the size of the explosion), that the tanker, should that be the cause, was thrown... but it'd then have to be a big monster with a lot of strength which is why I don't want to say that's what we'll most likely see, but the explosion's too big for a ruptured gas main.
And to reitterate a point mentioned a number of times, the poster can't be used as an accurate depiction of timeline or events. It's there to be dramatic and get people interested, not to be an accurate depiction of the plot.

maybe the monster has fire/explosion powers... sounds kinda lame and its way over used in monster movies but i mean JJ is basing this thing off of godzilla...
and by basing i mean thats where he got the idea from... not another godzilla

Thought we had missiles that can hit, detonate a area w/o destroying everything around it. What was all that video footage from the war showing us taking out one structure w/o the ones around it.

Seems unlikely, the clues so far suggest a water-based creature so it doesn't seem likely it'd have fire 'powers' of any kind.

Texas City Catastrophe the tanker scenario isn't consistent with the Texas City Catastrophe. Oil tankers do not carry barrels. They have large tanks, that is why they are double hulled, because when breached they spill oil not the physical barrels. They off-load in port to large holding tanks, usually a tank farm complex. That is what created secondary explosions and debris in Texas City after the initial explosion of the tanker.
The fire-balls more closely resemble the "lava bombs" depicted in the Tommy Lee Jones movie Volcanoe. Don't know if that was accurate.
You can either take everything as completely accruate to try to unravel the mystery, or believe that the makers are merely guessing about technical aspects of explosions and trajectories. just like trying prove theories from the movie poster. The poster was not meant to acurrately depict the events within the movie itself.

Didn't actually realize that honestly - thanks...
Anyhoo...
I was leaning more towards the "ejected fireballs more than a mile
inland" reference (However that occured the similarity seemed parallel) ...
Although I suppose it's irrelevant regardless, seeing as the azplozion
occurs on land anyway.

Re: Texas City Catastrophe Does anyone have good video imaging/editing to enlarge/zoom in on one of those fireballs to see if it a fragment of building or maybe a egg w/ tiny monsters.
