 Attention all developers!

First of all, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Blake and I am 100% new to this scene! I am doing a project for a college class and I basically have to help create an ARG! I am a part of the developers group and so I'm in charge of bringing all of the parts of an ARG together. All I'm asking for now is a little bit of insight on how to get started, and I was hoping that an experienced developer could possibly toss me a couple of tips on getting everything started! I have done some research, but I would also like to have a little bit of direct insight from someone that has helped developed an ARG! Absolutely any help is appreciated, thank you in advance! If you prefer to email me, feel free at blake0452001yahoo.com! Very Happy

Do it for a good cause

If you have to develop an ARG why not give yourself a focus and work towards a good cause while you're at it:

Hi my name is Josh. I'm also working on this project with Blake. This is my 1st post so I figured I'd introduce myself. I'd like to play an ARG so that I can understand the workings of the game better. Any suggestions on an ARG for a beginer like me?

Thanks for any and all help!

Josh

definitely you should review previous games to see how trailheads were developed (what was used for the rabbitholes) and how players responded to different methods of character interaction & puzzles. What types of websites work well, and how to avoid some dangerous pitfalls (i.e. leaving information available on a website that shouldn't have been found early because it was too easy to guess the location).

I'd suggest reading through a game or two that has completed. It will take a while to read, but well worth it. Try Metacortechs or Sammeeeees. NyTakma or Mei Geist. These are all grassroots (not corporate sponsored) games that utilized different modes of interaction & delivery, and all reached successful conclusions.

As for current offerings? Hard to tell which of the newest options are going to play out (many grassroots impload). I'm currently involved with Eldritch Errors - but this is more Chaotic Fiction and very heavy on interaction (not so much puzzles). You might try Silver Ladder - I'm not very familiar with the current happenings and not sure if any one has organized a wiki or Story So Far thread to get you caught up.

In the beginning...

Hey Blake!

That is so cool! I had to do a mini ARG for a College project as well.

First and foremost the most important thing of all before puzzles and media and all of that fun stuff is the story. You and your team need to decide exactly what message you want to get across, what story you want to tell. Once you have a basic structure you are well on your way.

Some things to consider when choosing a story are:

1) Genre - what will it be - history - horror - sci-fi???
2) Your audience - Who are you trying to reach? What do they like - what do they dislike? What will make them passionate and want to follow your story and invest themselves in your game?
3) Message - what message do you want to send? Is there a moral to this story? How can it be woven in?
4) Logic - Does your story make sense? Are there any gaping logic holes that may trip players up and make them loose interest?

It is best if you have a basic story structure to follow (basically a start, a conflict and a finish is all you need - although the more full the story the better) once this is in place you can start to plug in anything else you need from there!

Once you have your story you can decide how you want to make it happen, the puzzles and the media you want to integrate and how it will make logical sense to do so! You can choose the level of difficulty and also design the rabbithole (which will lead the players into the game).

Remeber at all times to stick like glue to your story. In all the excitement there will likely be times when you get of course and lost in some detail. But always keep in mind that you are designing this game for other people to play - and that in order to maximize their experience it has to make sense to them!!!

I wish you all the best of luck!

Sincerely,

Star
