Moving from Rabbit to the Cheshire Cat?
How do you transition from playing to creating..

My due apologies if I have this in the wrong forum.
(My question is a bit in the grey area between groups)

I'm looking for some guidance on transitions.
In that, while I enjoy playing the odd ARG or two, I actually have more fun creating (or helping create) a story for others.

(What I get for being a LARPer for years.. eventually you get to a point of wanting to move off the stage and move to behind the scenes)

So, anyone have a good suggestion on:
  1. Differences to bear in mind?
  2. Useful skills that could transition?
  3. Where one goes?

Thanks!

First off, come on in, the water is fine. There are alot of "grassroots PMs" who've made that same leap, and many of the rest of us didn't know the pool was called ARG until after we were already wet.

Here's maybe the biggest difference in crossing to the other side than in other genres like LARPing or MUDding or whatnot: the audience is alot smarter than you could EVER anticipate. Very few people can stand up against the Hive Mind in a solo capacity, and it seems like those few that do spent years (!!) in pre-planning to be ready for that. I think that aspect is what leads to many of the "implosions" we see, or the places where collaborative control with the players seems to slip away.

It ain't easy. I've done a few ARGs now, and I'd never contemplate doing it solo (but, then, most of the really fun things to do in life are better with teams anyway.)

But that doesn't mean there aren't stories bubbling down in you that you want to share, and I think that impulse (no matter what canvas you throw it at) is the heart of what makes people do any art: they do it because they have no choice to, not because they want to Wink
