[Trailhead] The Soho Project
Countdown and a sign-up box - check!

http://www.fictionalmedia.co.uk/

Via Dan Hon's blog (it should be apparent by now that, yes it is one of the feeds on my reader) and seems to be a product of the ARG Games Lab workshop (see this thread). Didn't receive anything on sign-up and their privacy policy is an incredibly private 404 Smile .

Countdown ends at 09:00 (BST) on Friday the 19th October. If my maths is right. Which often it isn't.

Embarrassing isn't it? I'm a scientist as well. All I can say is that my handwriting is a little neater than your average scientist and my calculator has well worn keys. I much prefer the letters section on Countdown. Maybe evening classes are the way to go?

An invitation

Hello there.

I'd like to tell you about The Soho Project: a big game/adventure happening online and in Soho over the next few weeks.

In it, I am working for a fictional media company called Fictional Media. My fictional identity is Prof Murray Fox. There are a few other people involved whom you might recognise.

Fictional Media is launching The Soho Project, which is a make-your-own-reality game - a bit like a DIY reality show, where players sign up, choose their own fictional identity, form teams and do acts/missions/challenges in and around Soho (that's Soho in London, although I'd love to see what happened if you tried to play in SoHo in New York).

You score points; loads of points if you're filmed doing so by another team. The winners will feature in a pilot 'It's Your Soho' shot on 27 October and screened to media commissioning editors.

All of this is true. But none of you will be surprised if I hint that there may be something else going on.... You'll find out more if you sign up to play.

Whatever happens, it should be a lot of fun.

Here's the link: www.fictionalmedia.co.uk

Do sign up if you fancy.

It is a game you can play as much/little as you and your team like.

Please spread the word.

For those of you who like pictures, here's the flyer.

Best,

David Varela

Turns out their Privacy Policy is not a 404:

Flyer is behind a Perplexorum login, so you can get it that way or find it here

know what you mean, but I got enough to know I'm pretty much out of it, as nowhere near Soho. Still I'll have a look and see if there's any point in playing...

That e-mail in full:

Jim Rummy wrote:

Hail Hunters!

You are the first wave. The alphas of our beta test. Thank you for your interest, and welcome to The Soho Project. We are now live.

What is the Soho Project? It is the first ever Pervasive Multi-Platform User-Generated Digitally-Mediated Multi-Genre Interactive TV Web 3.0 Experience (PMPUGDMMGITW3E). Don't worry! - we decided not to stick its official acronym, and for the moment we're just calling it THE SOHO PROJECT. As players, you are all hunting for the essence of Soho, seeking to capture the spirit of the area. Working in teams, you will act as researchers, reporters, videographers, performers and more. Some of you will be all of these at the same time. So here's what you do.

1. Sign up as a player in our Facebook Application (http://www.apps.facebook.com/thesohoproject), choose your Fictional Identity and answer the question - 'What's Your Soho?'

2. Create or join a team. You can only see teams that feature someone in your friends list.

3. Choose a pursuit. Pursuits are your missions and challenges. Go forth onto the streets of Soho. Carry out your chosen pursuit, have it filmed, and upload the result onto YouTube, tagging it with thesohoproject. Why YouTube? Simple. Yourselves and your broader global audience are our editors. Clips are prioritised for inclusion into the Final Entity by their response and popularity on YouTube. So you need to get your clip seen and talked about.

4. Check out the leaderboards, uploaded videos and more at www.fictionalmedia.co.uk. Our site is now updated with information about Fictional Media for new recruits; if you're interested in being part of the future of media then take a look. It could be good for you and your team... IMPORTANT - the site and app are still in BETA test - if you find anything amiss please email me, cc: ibrokeitSPLATfictionalmedia.co.uk. There are rewards for diligence in this arena.

5. Be vigilant for any signs of viral infiltration of your pursuits. More info on this later, but if you see a man with three balls, run like the wind.

The Soho Project is powered by our Box Like Alchemical Knowledge Engine. It's complicated, but BLAKE feeds on video. He will power up and start scoring teams' submissions at some point over the weekend. It's organically dependent on how much video you players upload, so get out there. Highly limited edition FM t-shirts for the first 5 uploaded videos.

The team with the most points at 5pm on Saturday 27 October will win the TSP Flask of Fecundity and feature in a pilot documentary about The Soho Project to be screened to major media commissioning editors. High-scoring teams will also be invited to participate in the Fictional Media IPO - a highly profitable opportunity that few will wish to pass up.

As a reward for your early interest, we would like to point you to a special resource that may help you build ideas for pursuits - it's at http://snipurl.com/fictionalsoho . We would also like to let you know about some special events we have coming up over the course of the game. Fictional Media are sponsoring the launch party for the London Games Festival Fringe at 01zero-one, Mon 22 Oct 6-9pm. We have a limited number of places available to players who catch our eye before then. Play well for free beer...

Then there's... Double Points Wednesday (24 Oct, also at 01zero-one, 6-9pm). As the name suggests! A great opportunity to score big, meet other players and Fictional Media employees. And finishing up with… Super Stag Saturday (27 Oct, 01zero-one, 2-5pm). The climax of The Soho Project. Where it all comes together. Unmissable.

We look forward to welcoming you into the heart of Fictional Media and sharing with us as we create One Soho (FM). The rewards are as great as you choose to make them.

With all good wishes

Jim Rummy
Executive Reality Facilitator, The Soho Project

There seems to be a fondness for slightly cheesy (queasy) pseudonyms (I'm Echo Climax. YES! Yes! Yes! Yes!). Seeing as you have to film in Soho I would guess that at least one member of your team needs to actually physically present and if you don't want the poor bugger to be exhausted and bedraggled then there should probably be more people who can be physically present. I don't know what the official line on that is. It would be interesting to know.

Having joined a team and seen some of the challenges. Yes, you need to be there.

Though with my shouting at people in the street to get them to do ridiculous things ability (look! that's my bag. And Chippy in a hat) this one should be a doddle:

BUSINESSMAN TUG-O-WAR

Organise a tug-of-war in a public space (ropes available from the Shop)
Difficulty: 9/10
