Peeking round the curtain

Yesterday, I received a letter which looked like it might be the start of a puzzle trail. So I followed it (the first step was the hardest), and reached a point where there's a document nobody else could access. The message was "would you care to join me behind the curtain?"

Turns out one of my friends is running a game of some kind. Not quite sure what kind of game it is yet, but it looks vaguely ARG-like. He's asked me to be a character in his game, and I'm not really sure about it. Is this a common thing, or completely off the wall?

As I understand it, I'd be playing, but in a different way from anyone else. I'd be the guy posting things like "I got this mysterious note, can anyone help me decode it?" in my blog. I'd be trying to solve the puzzles, but also sharing them with other players. Depending on how the plot develops, I might even be creating some puzzles for players, while trying to solve others.

I'd still be myself, but I would know some of the characters in "real life". So if the players think the best course of action is to break into a character's house and search for documents, I pass that on to the PM and he might hide the documents in his own house for me to search for the next time I visit. Or he might just tell me to report that I found nothing.

Can anyone offer any advice on situations like this? Seems to be a bit of a confusing situation, but it sounds like it might be fun. If anyone's done this before, are there any obvious pitfalls/mistakes to be aware of?

(And where do the UF rules stand on this? Would I still be allowed to talk about the game?)

It sounds like basically you'll be BTS (behind the scenes) but not completely privy to all details. Actually, it sounds like it might be fun. It's like you get to do the fun parts of being a puppet master but without doing most of the hard work. If you feel like it's something you'd enjoy doing, and be capable of doing, then go for it.

Because of the nature of UF, I think it would be best if you were not an active participant in the UF group's thread, because this would technically make you a character, and characters aren't supposed to post on UF (more than once ;D).

I'd go for it.

Yeah, this would be ok--but you wouldn't be able to post on Unfiction.

Chasing the Wish did something kinda similar, though it was different. (The 'semi-BTS' people were allowed to play on UF.) You may want to talk to Konamouse.

It sounds like you're being asked to be a correspondent between the players and PMs, like Nikki Bauer is in LG15. It sounds like fun. I'd say go for it! Just don't post on UF--keep it to your blog.

The BTS work done for CTW was "in character" (I played Angie Shapiro, the gal working at the restaurant, answering the phones and emails).

Characters are NEVER allowed to post in uF and I (as a player) could not react to anything known by Angie without another player posting it. And Angie could not react to anything on uF without a player sending that to her as an email. As a BTS character then PM kept me very compartmentalized so I did not know ANYTHING that Angie wouldn't know (and never ahead of time - it was very right at the moment it was needed).

This PM (Dave S) is a very experienced conductor and has not done this since (used a player base to recruit folks to work as BTS characters).

You could not play the game and be IG at the same time. It's a very very fine line and at this point, you'd really just have to pick which side of the curtain to be and stay there.

Well ... looks like the position he's offering would be the worst of both worlds. I really can't see the fun in solving puzzles on my own. I suspect sooner or later I'll get a message from one of the characters anyway. I've set up a blog where I can post OOG speculation in case anyone else turns up, so now I'm just looking at the puzzles while I wait.

What an amazing offer! I'd love to do something like that!
