UPDATE: Melody's Blog

Went to the Grist Mill with Thad this afternoon. We had a picnic lunch and walked along the river for a bit. It was very romantic. We stopped by the grist mill and watched the demonstration of the drill press and sat and listened to the class on Mason Bees. After the class I saw Ginny while Thad was off getting a couple of sodas. We stood around chatting and I introduced her to Thad when he arrived. Jude also showed up soon after and when I introduced him to Thad he got an odd look on his face and so did Thad. Jude said something like "I'll talk to you Monday..." or something like that. Thad just got all stoney faced and didn't say anything. Then Jude told Ginny they had to get back to town, Ginny reminded me about Karen's baby shower in a couple of weeks and off they went.

I asked Thad if Jude was going to go to one of the Restorers meetings Monday, but he didn't say anything. We drove back to town in silence. I wasn't sure if I said something wrong, or what exactly happened out there at the Grist Mill...

My gut tells me that something big is gonna happen in Amboy on Monday.

I thought it was Marty in the NRA. This from the Ideltech webpage:

Quote:
Living in Amboy has never made Marty happy so he is moving to a condo in North Portland . Marty has a Doberman guard dog. In his spare time he tends Star Trek conventions, collects comics, and tends his NRA committee meetings.

I recieved the following email,

Quote:
Subject: Re: A possible conflict in interests?
From: "Melody Heller" <mheller@ide***ch.***>
To: sfox@ide***ch.***
Cc: mthesburg@ide***ch.***

Dear Mr. Fox,

As I have stated to several others:
I was not aware that my personal after hours, non-employment related activities were subject to vetting by my employer. I have not now, or ever broken my my word, written or otherwise, nor do I intend to start.

To the best of my knowledge it is still illegal to discriminate against employees based on associations outside the office, when no criminal misconduct has occurred. To suggest otherwise smacks of McCarthy-ism at best, and is illegal at worst.

If you feel my personal relationships will hinder my performance of my employment contract, I think you should take it up with your supervisor and allow it to be handled through proper channels, and not as part of some witch hunt. One would have to wonder, Mr. Fox, just why you have such a fixation on my personal life.

Sincerely,

Melody Heller

in reponse to

Dear Ms Heller

I notice from reading your blog that you have formed an attachment to
a Mr Thad Tidwell, founder member of the organisation know as 'The
restorers.' I also assume that you are aware that the mission
statement of this group can
be found here <http://www.therestorers.org/Mission.htm
http://www.therestorers.org/Mission.htm and read as follows,

"Well it has become apparent to all of use here at The Restorers that
our mission has been clarified. As most of you probably know by now,
Amboy was the site of a large protest against the company known as
Ideltech. The protest targeted the companies search program or bot
called T.O.B.I. After much conversation, with many people that
attended protest and those of you I have had the pleasure to meet on
the internet, it has become very clear that
we focus our energy to protecting our right to privacy. We know that
Ideltech was started by 3 young men that grew up here in the Amboy area.
Something that started out as a project for school has turned into a very
lucrative business for these men. But as they strive for wealth and all
that
comes with it, our privacy has the potential to be invaded without us even
realizing it. The government has made it clear that they will acquire this
technology and use it in the war on terror. But as we have seen lately
anyone can be considered a terror threat. If this program is allowed to be
used by the government then with just raw data that it collects it could
very well invade the privacy of anyone and mark them as a threat and the
government will act swiftly to stave off that threat, real or imaginary.
Our
fight needs to be taken to Ideltech now, before the government has
complete
control of this technology. So we send a call out to all that believe in
the
right to privacy. Use all the tools at your disposal to let Ideltech and
its
management know that this is unacceptable. That we as Americans will fight
to the end, to keep those rights that our forefathers saw fit to bestow
upon
all of us. We will not rest until our right to privacy is secure and the
threat to our rights has been averted or eliminated."

I also notice from reading your editorial pieces 'YOU HAVE BEEN
PRE-APPROVED!' and 'BIG BROTHER, A REALITY?' that you are not in
favour of personal invasion of privacy.

I therefore humbly ask why you choose to work for a company such as
Ideltech and do you not feel that you may have a possible conflict of
interests in your relationship with Mr Tidwell?

I hope you can satisfy me in this matter to my own personal
satisfaction so that it will not be necessary for me to pass on my
query to more senior personnel within Ideltech.

Yours truly,

SFOX

My question is "Touche or Touchy?"

I note that she cc'd her response to Marcus. Interesting to see how her meeting goes on Monday.

I'd have to say a little of both. Obviously Marcus knows who Tidwell is, so why hasn't anyone brought this up before? Maybe it's her personal relationships outside of work that allowed that to be overlooked, ie her friendship with Marcus. I can't imagine they wouldn't at least had a discussion with her about this, asking how she can commit herself to work for the company her boyfriend wants to tear down.

I think it is Marcus' opinion that we overreacting, and that's my opninion as well Wink

Marcus has shown considerable trust in some people, see for example the way he dismissed allegations against Rose on the UI boards. As long as people do not show the wrong intentions or bad behaviour, I do not think it is our place to confront them with doubts of their integrity... just my humble opinion though Smile

I guess so. I'm just saying, if Marcus wants to give his ex-girlfriend a job, working on a federally funded project ($76 million) to fight the war on terror, while she dates a guy who has publicly declared that he wishes to tear down the company, and at the same time witnesses numerous potential defections amongst his newly recruited and none security vetted staff to larger and more established corporate rival while avoiding being blow up; (breath) he's asking for trouble. You can't say I didn't try and warn him Wink Very Happy

I think you need to understand the Restorers a bit more. The idea is to stop the government from using TOBI to invade our privacy and gather information about us. This is not the same thing as wanting to tear down the company-- not at all--it's about preserving the rights of the individual to be protected from governement interference in daily life.

Under the constitution as implimented by statute and interpreted bycase law, the gov't cannot obtain information to be used in a criminal case against you unless certain criteria are met. One of these, used for approving wire taps, is that a judge determines that the there is "probable cause" for a warrant to be issued. Without a warrant, information obtained by an illegal wiretap is not admissable in court against you.

TOBI, it appears, is for all intents and purposes under government control. The government, as the major funding of this project , will be able to dictate how TOBI is used. But this can easily violate the protections of the constitution.

The law on this is complicated and just emerging under the Patriot Act's diminishing of the legal protections of the constitution. Under the Patriot Act, a warrant can be issued with just a suspicion that a person is involved in terrorism.

If people are interested in understandin the threat pose by TOBI they could look at the ACLU link on the MATRIX software. The discussion starts

I take that as a great compliment. I can't help it; it's what I believe and what I do. I spared you guys the heartfelt email I wrote to Marcus about my reasons for not working for Ideltech. The irony of this is that I have very liberal political views....how I ended up in a militia in the small town of Amboy bemuses me too. Laughing

I just realised that you don't have access to the UI boards. Let me tell you that Marcus defended you against accusations against you having violent and/or wrong intentions towards Ideltech. So the heartfelt e-mail was well recieved I think Smile

A simple question, why is it not right to gather personal information about a US individual, but ok to do the same to a non-US individual?
