Actually, I'd say word Z is Hive, based on three clues converging (beehive, Charlotte Hornets, hive/registry).

Hmm...
So you're saying the words might be 'what do these have in common' solutions...? That, or determining the first letter...
In which case I'd say the first is either MAP or M (map &/or michigan), just as the last would be HIVE or H (hive &/or hornet). Also, the number of images would match the number of letters.

Don't know what the middle would be those - what's common between a picture of a castle, and a diagram of some kind of electromagnetic instrument? that's also 2 letters...?

Really curious what video game is depicted in the last hex. Confused

Quote:
I can try and get a higher resolution scan of 1, but I doubt it'll be of much use. I don't think the postcard itself goes much above 300 dpi.

Well if the text in the hex isn't legible anyway, then I wouldn't worry about it... but if it can be touched up to help read it, it might help to determine what it is. (if indeed it's more difficult than M or MAP)

*want last email!*

And, in the same vein, it occured to me this morning that word X would likely be Isle/Aisle (ISLE Royale, ExILE).

This leaves us with the word or word part in the middle; no luck here so far.

MAP/ISLE (ARC?)HIVE ?

could there be a castle name, or type of castle that contains "arc" or "ark", or a topic related to castles as such?
it doesn't quite explain the difference in bracket size, or relate to the number of hexes per 'word'... but archive sounds eerily like it might work...
I really wish we could see clearly what's in that first hex...

I wish there was a website already! Razz

I wish we could find the website already Wink

Think it's time to settle on a name yet?
The wiki has "Randibone", this thread has "Zetria Atrian", ARGN has "Zetria Atrian", I'm not sure yet.
And an IRC channel to lurk in?

About the card:
Yes, I can see exile + isle royale + unknown for X.
Arc(h) would be nice for Y.
And beehive + registryhive + unknown + unknown for Z.

But why 4 images for hive and only 2 for the middle bit? It's as if whoever made this thought the middle would be obvious while the last would be hard..

For the 'coliseum' image, I tried finding it with http://images.google.com/images?q=seating+chart&filter=0 and http://images.google.com/images?q=seating+plan&filter=0 but I may have overlooked it, there are so many results that look a lot like what we're looking for Sad

The "code" in the background is invalid syntax for perl, but it looks a lot like perl code to escape input by adding slashes.

It's been a couple of years since my last ARG, so I'm still a bit rusty Smile

great work you guys... impressed Smile
now just waiting for the last email..still. But I think we're on track. I doubt they wouldn't be ready for finding the website, since we've had the postcards over a week... those codes though, just bugging me!

ETA:... oh man... so stupid Razz can't believe I didn't see this before

0EAV
1XRE
2ICC
3LHO
4EIM

EXILEARCHIVECOM

sheesh... haha

so two trailheads, of course - postcards, leading to the website, and emails leading to the website. d'oh!

ETA2: as for the name, I picked Randibone (for the wiki) because Zetria, while the first character we 'met', is part of book 1.. Minimer Randibone seems to be an overarching character, and even through interaction with Alvy and Jedd, I think Randibone will prove to play much more in this arg coming up... so my vote's for Book of Minimer Randibone (BoMR or Randibone for short). But that's just me Smile Zetria Atrian has been tossed around more so it's more recognizable, so it's also a possible choice, as is now Exile Archive, for eg.

Awesome solves! I'm so glad there are puzzle-solvers here. Smile

QUERIES:
Minimer Randibone >> http://exilearchive.com/books.php
Kallomar Ridditum >> http://exilearchive.com/books.php
Vandemar [a person mentioned in Alvyurin's blog] >> Nothing

I think it's safe to say that all of the characters that are in the book of Minimer Randibone lead to the books archive.

Direct link to Alvyurin's blog.

Direct link to Jedditor's blog.

Finally, did anyone else notice the quick message that appears before the numerical code on the 'Query' screen?

I took a screencap. Smile

Yeah, the way that code flash works:
It fires off a request to timevar.php
It displays PLZWAITKTHX (Please wait okay, thanks)
Until it has received and parsed the response from timevar.php
Then it shows the numeric code it got from that php

Btw, good job on everything so far thebruce, could not have done it without you.
Felt dumb as well when I saw how to solve the 'code' Wink

We still have a couple of mysteries to solve though:
- What does the Lions Head signify (xnbomb came up with http://www.5dollarcoatsofarms.com/samplechapter/samplch1.html in a few seconds, which has a *very* close match)
- How does R-Type Final tie in to any of this?
- Is staccatoseebackcabal coincidence?
- What does the sqrt(9) code from email8 mean?
Code:
CAJWBONANAAXA>>
CMProtocolError@@@@@@t: Datacross
sqrt(9)wflgqkfyvzwulgtawuzmjowvzgwyzvqgwvzcn
whaywjwfalcddqmldqfqospvxqmfflzgewuksiwaplzg
zwzsyqfkdmljwqqfwysqqjspgljwjywdnywvqgwogtca
pyxqjmukaifwfqgwjxtawpvkkfljwdkgfuvwpsqrt(9)
LXANMDVY<<

I'll be looking at that today. So far I only noticed that it can form two 9x9 squares.

Code broken:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Method: Vigenere
Key: ssc
Result: enjoyingthestorieshuhwethoughtyoudhavefigureditalloutbynowandfoundthemessageinthehexagonsbutheyoneway
oranotherwellgetyouworkingforussignedyourfriendsinthelionsden

Broken by Kender's CryptBreaker

Enjoying the stories huh?
We thought you'd have figured it all out by now and found the message in the hexagons.
But hey, one way or another we'll get you working for us.
Signed: Your friends in the lion's den.

Funny, because when I found the website, the personnel page gave a 404 and only the Zetra Atrian character linked to books.php Wink

Guess that "solves" the lion's head too..

[Added a line break in the spoilered code because it was stretching the page. ~Rekidk]

I was just trying that as you posted the solve Kender. Smile

I'm impressed by all the progress that's been made since yesterday, great work guys!

Oh, and the lions crest symbolizes: Dauntless courage. Bravery, strength, ferocity, and valour.

Take your pick
http://www.fleurdelis.com/lions.htm

ETA: trusty old wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_%28heraldry%29

ETA again: This is the one they used. Just inverted the colors and simplified the eye. It's a "Lion's head erased contourny sable."

[UPDATE] New blog posts

Looks like our two scholars have gotten back to us. Jedditor gives a basic description of the system - he's apparently trying to figure out system commands. (I think I will recommend to him trying some help requests.) Alvyruin (sp? Wii does not support cut-and-paste) apparently liked the condensation idea, and passed it to the group. I credit 29 Stumps^H^H^H^H^H^HPalms with that one. Smile

wow guys here I am thinkin im doin pretty good in the other games im playin and I read the solves here and I feel like a noob all over again.

Great job anyways.. this is a really complicated game, glad we got the pros over here lol

so um, what can I do... coffee anyone? want me to order a pizza? Im good at that u know...

EDIT: I posed the same question to Alvyurin that I pose you guys... what do you think these "Exiles" are? I havent seen a post describing them so Im guessing all we know thus far is what the query results have spit back at us..

also, where are they right now? or when are they? Obviously not Earth.. unless they brought mages with them...

and for a future note: Dont try using "'s in the reply box... they dont show up when you post the comment on Alvy's and Jedd's blogs.

there are two codes on the postcode, by the way

Quote:
$_=$a;
s/([\'\\])/\\$1/g;
print '$a=\''.$_.$a;

which outputs
$a='

and, harder to see, probably not correctly transcribed here as it doesn't work, something like:

Quote:
$a='\';
$_=$a;
s/([\\\'\\\\])/\\\\$1/g;
print '\'$a=\\'\'.$_.$a;'

Possibly one goes before the other?
