[META]PG-13 or R?
What rating do you want?

So who is pulling for an R and who is pulling for a PG-13?

I think it will end up being PG-13.

An R-rating would be interesting but I don't know if it would add anything more to the movie other then some graphic death and destruction scenes.

I'd put my money on PG 13. They'll try to mass market it as the next godzilla, and that means aiming for the teenagers. Personally, I don't mind. Like you say, there's little they can add to a movie like this that'll push them to the R rating.

NC-17 Cool Shocked

no but seriously i think it will get an R (much to my delight). at this point i don't see them starting any sort of advertising campaign directed towards the younger crowd.

I have to say R: I *need* to see Jamie and the rest of them die a quick, painful death at this point.

PG-13 = Bigger Audience, More Money

I don't think R would add much.

If I know anything about the MPAA (which is very little, considering I'm a Canuck) R is the most likely rating, and is probably the one that JJ's shooting for. PG-13 is generally puts too many boundaries on movies and limits creativity, and this ones nothing but creative... and all the good 14A movies here have been rated R across the border.
(I'm guessing 14A in Canada.)

R
Although they want to attract the teen and tween audience, I think it'll be hard to put the edge and action they want without ending up in R territory. Something else that's been shown to be true before is that motion picture companies try to get a rating that's one higher than the actual market they intend to draw, with the exception of the G market. Basically, by getting a movie R rated they know kids will get guardians to take them or otherwise seek tickets and get into the movie. To a teen or tween, this 'forbidden/rule breaking' adds to the appeal of going to see a movie. If someone over 17 has to take them, that adds at least 1 to every group of tickets sold to seat anyone 17 and under.

If they make this PG-13, they'll have to leave out a lot of the language and sexual innuendo. We've already gotten both of those from Jamies videos, haven't we?

Personally i hope its R, i want to see lots of blood and violence, but thats just me. I love blood and violence, and swearing would be cut down like Transformers, the said shit and bitches but when Gibson was running from Scorponok he totally said mother fucker but the edited it out.

Blood & gore doesn't get an R rating. Show some boobs and say the F word more than 3 times and voila!

PG-13 will get a plenty big audience. What was Independence Day, Transformers, or Die Hard series?

Maybe the "raw violence" that a movie shown through a camcorder might offer will raise the rating to R? Showing off a stylized kind of violence is probably preferred by those in charge of the rating than cold, harsch violence. The "nightvision scope"-scene from "28 weeks later" is a good example of that.

If you're expecting this to be a blockbuster action flick, then yeah, it would be a PG-13 flick.

But this ISN'T a blockbuster action flick.

It's an edgy, experimental mindfuck flick aimed at grownups -- mainly, college students and college grads. The viral campaign points *entirely* towards that, and *nowhere near* a blockbuster action flick genre.

The fact that it's being released in the dead of winter in (traditionally) the slowest month of the year for Hollywood (biggest weekend to date for a January release was the Special Edition of Star Wars with digitally-added footage, and it only made about $35 mill) *guarantees* that this isn't being marketed as a blockbuster action flick.

So. It will definitely be Rated R -- mainly for language and sex and adult themes -- but possibly for some splattergore as well.

This movie preview was *not* aimed at the kids in the Transformers audience, but their parents. Wink

I loved 28 weeks later because of the chopper scene tearing thru all those infected or when the dad stuck his thumbs in his wifes eyes, those were glorious scenes. I dont think you can show that much gore in a PG-13 movie.

Two out of three there... Die Hard was rated R.
