Some could have meant it in ways other than what it would appear to have been intended Cool

I know, heaven forbid Paramount from marketing a movie the way they want to market it without the approval of the UnFiction nerds. Paramount could have easily tossed a bunch of marketing dollars the way of this movie and left all of your Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons nerds in the depths of your moms basements. Instead, they took the time to do something cool and create an interactive marketing experience.

But, apparently they forgot to check with UnFiction about what they should do and how they should do it. The multi-million dollar corporation didn't check with dinky little UnFiction. Whoops! I guess they didn't realize that the world revolves around a collective of nerds talking smack online.

News flash: Paramount can, and will, do what they want. It's not up to UnFiction. You guys should be happy enough that they went along with your little ARG world instead of flooding the airwaves with commercials. They're the ones taking the chance of relying on nerd hype versus proven marketing strategies.

Good job in biting the hand that feeds you, guys.

Good job on completely missing the boat there, Helo. Shifty Eyes

Since you apparently don't realize it: Abrams is DELIBERATELY STEERING CLEAR OF TRADITIONAL ADVERTISING FOR THIS MOVIE.

Say it with me: That's...the...whole...point.

By dodging Madison Avenue (you know, the big advertising corporations that charge everyone -- including Hollywood -- shitloads of cash to sell their wares on television and elsewhere), Abrams is charting new territory by creating a movie whose ad campaign is tied up entirely in viral websites and ARGs at virtually no cost to him or the studio.

Get the picture? No Madison Avenue = studio saves a LOT of bucks in marketing = mo' profits for the studio and JJ = mo' money, mo' money, MO' MONEY.

So. In order for the viral campaign and/or ARG to work, JJ *has* to rely on the fans to be (a) interested enough and (b) informed enough and (c) intelligent enough to keep up.

IOW: JJ Abrams and Paramount NEED "us Unfiction nerds" (and IMDB, and AICN, and CloverfieldClues, and others) to play the game in order for the non-commercial experiment to work.

Cappice?

No, it not what you are implying Smile

Someone had emailed me this morning telling me the site had launched, and wanted to know If I thought it was OOG, and I mentioned the spelling error. This was before I came here and mentioned it.

Ok so here's another one that I don't know whether it's been talked about before, so I'm posting it here...

Look at the people in the back row. What they are doing is called "Ameslan" - commonly called "American Sign Language".

Anyone know sign language that can read the sentence here?
There are very easily identifiable individual letters and numbers in there BUT several of them are actual word signs - an entire word in one sign. There has got to be a clue in this.

Since hmghosthoost brought up Slusho it's a good opportunity to draw a parallel. Remember when Slusho first went up and how a lot of the site didn't work properly? Maybe it's the same with BF. It seems that most of the viral for the movie has been sort of flying by the seat of their pants, somewhat disorganized.

I have to agree. For all the clues we've found, not one of them seems to have any real SOLID relivence to the movie itself, with the exception of maybe the teddy bear.

Nice recovery.
Err...
I mean OK, that clears it up. Laughing

More seriously, gamejackers seem to come largely in two types:
1. those that actually like the game but want to draw attention to themselves
2. those that hate the game, and want to have fun at the expense of the players
Every time people blindly embrace these sites, they nurture both kinds of gamejacker. Healthy skepticism can out the first type in a constructive way, and foil the second type completely. Some of the first type are trying to have fun and enjoy the reveal - I'd think if this was you CC, you'd be like that. This is a really heavily detailed site, which makes me wonder who is really doing it. My suspicions at this point lean towards the second type though.

Site is still up, but the Flash on the page is currently inaccessible.

Speaking of the Flash, before the spelling correction it was 'bold.swf' but after the correction it is now 'lpur6465zbn75621.swf'. The site also doesn't follow the convention of the others in that all SWFs on the known sites live in a 'swf' directory (slusho.jp/swf, tagruato.jp/swf). Here, the SWF is in the directory 'xbzk4417zfqr2876'. Randomly generated file and folder names.

Doing a 'View Source' on the page also shows a bunch of javascript currently generating the page (document.write), again very different than the known sites.

Nothing damning, just more circumstantial.

The theory about sign language was brought up the day that part of SLUSHO! was open. It was looked at heavily. Although some of it does look like sign language, no one here was able to figure it out yet, including me who knows a bit of sign language. But feel free to look into it more. It's just it was heavily researched already.

Use the (Search) button please, and make sure you arent reposting old theories or that you arent putting them on the wrong thread.

Now the flash version of the site is gone altogether and it's back to the original "Please Pardon Our Disarray" version.

Oh and another one, thought it might be worth mentioning, I found this in bold.swf:

Image_38.png = lorem ipsum dolor

Image_41.png = 3D

OOPS! Smile
Whoever made this forgot to remove these from the flash library of the swf.
Lorem ipsum dolor is usually present in templates right? it acts as a text filler

[edit]
Added:
Okay I found the template:
http://www.dynamicfactory.us/004/3Dtech/3Dtech.htm
the name of the template is 3Dtech.
