Ok, I know I'm stating the obvious here, but I thought it might help to break it down into it's numbers in case that means anything.

3 8 1
2 4 6
7 5

Don't know if it's important:

3 + 8 + 1 = 12
2 + 4 + 6 = 12
7 + 0 + 5 = 12
----------------
12 12 12 = 36

There are 12 combs on each postcard. And I'm not sure if you'll find a numerical code in the other postcards.

"eye" = 1 eye

"hour glass" = 2 glases

"flower" = 3 black petals and 4 white petals = 7 petals

"spider" = 8 spiderlegs

"ladder" = 6 rungs of a ladder

"bee bush" = 9 leaves

and so on... maybe it's nothing?!

Well i don't know perl very well, but it looks to me that some of the postcard code is very similar to the code present on this site: http://www.nyx.net/~gthompso/self_perl.txt

Postcard code:
Quote:

$a='\';$_=$a;s/([\\\'\\\\])/\\\\$1/g;print'\'$a=\\'\'.$_.$a;'

Quote:

$_=$a;s/([\'\\])/\\$1/g;print '$a=\''.$_.$a;

The code on the site in particular is the one by unknown:
Quote:

$a='\'; $_=$a; s/([\\\'\\\\])/\\\\$1/g; print \'$a=\\\'\'.$_.$a;
'; $_=$a; s/([\'\\])/\\$1/g; print '$a=\''.$_.$a;

From what i understand the perl scripts on this page are suppoused to be self-replicating. Somebody with more experience in perl like thebruce might want to take a look at it. To me if you combine the two scripts from the postcard and fix what chippy said might be transcribed errors you get the code from the site. Anyone else see that?

Agreed, to me they also seem self-replicating, and would fit in with the replicating nature of the design on the postcard. I've run the code and it gives the same output.
Quote:
perl arg2.pl
$a='\'; $_=$a; s/([\\\'\\\\])/\\\\$1/g; print \'$a=\\\'\'.$_.$a;'; $_=$a; s/([\'\\])/\\$1/g; print '$a=\''.$_.$a;

It is an example of a Quine (self-reproducing code)

ah, dunno how I missed the 2nd variant. bah.

so the two repeating lines in full are
Code:
$_=$a;s/([\'\\])/\\$1/g;print '$a=\''.$_.$a;$a='\';$_=$a;s/([\\\'\\\\])/\\\\$1/g;p
)/\\\\$1/g;print \'$a=\\\'\'.$_.$a;';$_=$a;s/([\'\\])/\\$1/g;print '$a=\''.$_.$a;

or
Quote:

$a='\'; $_=$a; s/([\\\'\\\\])/\\\\$1/g; print \'$a=\\\'\'.$_.$a;
'; $_=$a; s/([\'\\])/\\$1/g; print '$a=\''.$_.$a;

an exact match for the code you found by author: unknown
great work CDSpeck! it's an example of self-replicating perl. I don't know perl well, but it's a match, so I trust the source Smile

fiddling about with the query page, and the url pattern

I entered in "puzzle" and voila! it redirects to
http://exilearchive.com/square0.png

There's gotta be more of these to find!

edits:: there are!
enter in "code" and it shows a code that we've seen before.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
0EAV 1XRE 2ICC 3LHO 4EIM

editsx2:: type in "cmp"... we get "ERRORERRORAUTHORIZATIONDENIED" and have another login code!
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1346554
although it appears this is the new default code? hmm, using this new code and cmp doesnt give the authorizarion denied message.

Ooh! A puzzle!

I created #exilearchive at irc.chat-solutions.org to discuss.

Oh, the new logincode is time dependent. It changes every x minutes.

Along the bottom of the "puzzle" (in Black) are what appears to be the letters/numbers:

Quote:

EDIT:

On the side of the Dark Blue ocean pic/side of the music pic are what appears to be the letters/numbers:

Quote:

The fact that Columbo and one of the lizard ladies from V is in the puzzle made me crack a big smile. Smile

Erh, yeah. Separate the numbers from the letters and you get 0-9 and A-Z in the right order. Doesn't seem to puzzley to me..

the puzzle is "square0" so using square as key, it redirects to wikipedia page:
key-> square

On further investigation, it appears that:

Quote:
A0BC1DEF2GH3IJK4LMN5OP6QRS7TU8VWX9YZ

Runs around all 4 sides that are written in black.

Well first instinct tells me to line it up by number (due to thebruce's solve a ways back) so..

Quote:
A0
BC1
DEF2
GH3
IJK4
LMN5
OP6
QRS7
TU8
VWX9
YZ

Lines ups dont work too well on these posts..

This is all one line, I continued it for two reasons, one so the page doesnt extend, and two to try and match it into two even lines, just in case Wink

lining up is easier with the code tag. here are a few variant layouts of the alphanumeric string...
Code:
 A      A0   A0B
0BC    BC1   C1D E
1DEF  DEF2   F2G H
2GH    GH3   H3I J
3IJK  IJK4   K4L M
4LMN  LMN5   N5O
5OP    OP6   P6Q R
6QRS  QRS7   S7T
7TU    TU8   U8V W
8VWX  VWX9   X9Y Z
9YZ    YZ

edit: fixed 3rd column

I'm thinking the black lines are there to mark the magic square. So I'm guessing the pics are numbers and we need to figure out the "magic" sum?

Like: Lady from V = roman numeral V = 5

Thanks thebruce, good tidbit of info to know in the future.

I cant see any specific message in all of this, so its either random or we need to use this in relation to the other string of numbers/letters? Who knows at this point..

Just for reference:

Quote:
8 Squares across the top

Squares 2,3,4 are the top row of a 3x3 grid (9 Squares)

14 Squares Total.

EDIT: Looks like the whole turtle shell game came from China, as presumed.

Quote:
From the wikipedia page:

The Lo Shu square (3×3 magic square)

Chinese literature dating from as early as 650 BC tells the legend of Lo Shu or "scroll of the river Lo".[1] In ancient China, there was a huge flood. The people tried to offer some sacrifice to the river god of one of the flooding rivers, the Lo river, to calm his anger. Then, there emerged from the water a turtle with a curious figure/pattern on its shell; there were circular dots of numbers that were arranged in a three by three nine-grid pattern such that the sum of the numbers in each row, column and diagonal was the same: 15. This number is also equal to the number of days in each of the 24 cycles of the Chinese solar year. This pattern, in a certain way, was used by the people in controlling the river.
