Now it looks more like an aerial photograph of a town/city at night.

Nope - definitely space. If you're thinking surface, maybe the moon?

Definitely not the moon. I'm pretty sure it is space, either the target of a launch from Earth or the site of a launch to Earth.

But the new version of the picture looks like what you see when you look out the window late at night while flying cross-country.

image on other website hasnt changed. but im thinking that this is a close up...or a more "indepth" version of the blue checkered thing

the cross could be representing the biggest red blob? or another red blob?

--------
launch initiated? what was it that was supposedly launched
and it says the world is gonna end? 11th december?

our world? or another world?

inverted in paint

it has alot of squares which are the same size as the squares on the blue image (the little squares)

on source page
dateNow = new Date(2007,09-18,01,18,08,13,0);
dateNowServer = new Date(2007,09-18,01,18,08,13,0);

18th sept?

and whats the 011808130 standing for?
01? jan
18? 18th?
08? year?
13 0? 130am? 13:00?

also

dateFuture = new Date(2007,11,11,4,00,00)

which is exactly 1 month before the countdown ends?

Bah, didn't get e-mailed with the updates, otherwise I'd be posting sooner...

At first I thought the new image also looked like city lights - the section 3 squares up from the middle reminds me a little of Europe. But I now get the impression that the "scan", or map, or whatver it is, is just "incomplete". Certain squares have more info than others, so each one, I guess, represents some distinct difference.

Maybe each square is covered by a different "team", or satellite dish or something? Any chance we can see if this relates to something like SETI data?

Also, I randomly found out what Eric's chat avatar (see previous post here) relates to - the one that originally reminded me of the Mysterious Cities of Gold... it's:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mensa_International

Edit: BTW, each of those smaller grid squares is 32x32, a pattern we've seen before. The binariness of it all (32, 512) definitely sticks out to me - either it's computer generated, or significant in terms of bits and bytes. If it was a sky scan, I can't think why it would be so binary-based. Is there some way to find out how many different colours are presented in the image?

Edit 2:
Quote:

dateFuture = new Date(2007,11,11,4,00,00)

which is exactly 1 month before the countdown ends?

In Javascript terms, January = 0 and December = 11, so 2007,11,11 = 11th December.

AA is back? Which AA was Augustine? The game's on.

I forgot I had a possible third Nick - one that didn't work for Magpie, but that was doing evolutionary computation stuff at COGS. But I forget who it was, so I'll chase it up.

We really need a way to confirm whether the Nick we find is the Nick we're looking for.

[Addendum:] Thanks for the colour counting, JawZ.

I'm kind of assuming the the NN change is a (big) hint for us to invert colours, or to invert *something*.

Also, notice the headers: back/front.

Scribe, I think Nick is Nick from Magpie. Talk to him.

OK, there's just something about the way those dots are clustered that makes me want to look down, rather than up. See the attached image for an overlay of Europe/Africa on the image. I initially took a screen shot of Google Earth and placed the UK over the bit that reminded me of the UK. No resizing done.

This is a rough approximation to what I was thinking, but 1 thing in particular strikes me as important - the cross is pretty directly over Israel. This only intrigues me as Israel has come up before - see this post in the NN thread for the NN.org whois details.

Yes, this is sketchyish, but so is my graphical treatment. I'm not entirely convinced, but the Israel link is odd. Also, the bold red vertical line would then almost be on the Meridian Prime line (GMT). Plus the coloured dots then lie mostly over land - although these seem to be incomplete, with some grid squares not having any "data".

Argh, this is driving me mad.

(ETA: Turns out this is a map generated according to an xkcd idea - see here. There's fairly little overlap with the real world map, so I think the location of Israel is probably just coincidence here.)

Good News

I believe this is what you're looking for, Sir! (Scroll down to be amazed ;)

Did a search for "Ignore security" and "Go away", and old packetstorm pages came up:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/packetstormsecurity.org

(Edit: Blurgh, not an unforum-friendly URL? copy the whole lot...)

(Packetstorm is a pretty top computer-security site.)

Credit to Mason for following the "Site of the month" link at the bottom, to find said software.

We're looking into it now to see what it does, how to get it, and what we can use it against. Something round here must look like a SHA-1 or MD5 hash. :)

(ETA: interesting to note that there's an Israel mirror displayed at the top of the PS page. This doesnt seem to be on any of the archive.org pages, so must be relatively new.)
