When I saw the trailer I had the opposite impression. The movie seemed like it would be similar to Independence Day or War of the Worlds.

I'm wondering what you saw that gave you this impression?

What was the budget again? When is this being released? I think they already know this isn't box office gold so I don't see them shooting for any specific rating to draw bigger crowds. Personaly I'd rather see an R rating. I just don't think they have given us much reason to assume either/or though.

The trailer promised a viscerally realistic approach to something that's traditionally anything but realistic: a monster movie. That's original and exciting, and that's why the trailer was so freakin' amazing.

If they keep that up throughout, I think it HAS to be rated "R." It will be rated "R" for the same general reason that Saving Private Ryan was rated "R" - because it presents violent and disturbing events in a viscerally realistic way. I think that's enough for an "R" rating.

Kim Jong Il: "It will be 9/11 times 2,356."
Chris: "My god, that's... I don't even know what that is."
Kim Jong Il: "Nobody does."

It could be PG-13, but then I think it will suck (if nothing else, it will suck by comparison to what it could have been). My 2 cents.

It has to be R simply for the gore.

I remember reading a few stories saying this would be one of the gorefests of the year. A true HORROR movie in the sense of the many aspects of the word horror (hopefully not conceptual horror)

I, for one, hope this turns out to be a Neverending Story sequel.

If anyone's noticed, there has been a small burst of R rated films, like Gone baby gone, the heartbreak kid, we own the night, american gangster... Its funny, its like R after R after R... Idk what this movie will be, but I'm hoping for a PG-13.

When I saw the trailer, that was my first impression, too. Safe to say that everybody pretty much did.

But then when the viral campaign got underway...and you start piecing together this movie from a marketing standpoint...you begin to realize that there's NO WAY that Paramount/JJ Abrams have high hopes for this movie becoming a blockbuster franchise.

1) Release date. January 18, 2008. That is considered "dump time" for Hollywood. Like I said, the biggest release EVER in January (Star Wars re-release) grossed only $35 mil...and looking farther down the chart at boxofficemojo.com, a mere $17 million weekend would qualify your flick for the Top 20 of *All Time* for a January release...

...it's safe to say that you don't release a moneymaker in January.

2) The budget. Yeah, it's been argued that 30 mill can go a long ways in the FX department, but NO studio out there tries to sell their fx budget short if they intend to make a potential hit actioner -- let alone a potential franchise.

3) Along those same lines, there was an article last year about JJ Abrams' lucrative new contract with Paramount. He said that, in addition to bid budget moneymakers like Star Trek and The Dark Tower films, he also intended to make small films that were driven entirely by character and story instead of concept and fx -- on a budget of about $25 million each.

So it definitely sounds like 1-18-08 falls in the latter category.

4) Finally, marketing and exposure. If Paramount *really* thought this movie even stood a chance of becoming a blockbuster, they would NOT allow JJ to limit the marketing to this obscure viral campaign. Not only would there be MANY commercial trailers out there already, there would also be lots of mainstream-media exposure in outlets like Entertainment Tonight, E! News, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, and so on. Instead, we don't even know the title or official cast, the plot, or any other basic info.

5) As for my belief that the story points toward a head-trip kinda flick like Brazil or Vanilla Sky or even Fight Club: check the titles in all the kids' Myspace pages -- The Story of Pi; The House of Leaves; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; references to many surrealist directors like Bunuel, Gondry, Antonioni, etc; Kurosawa's "Rashomon"; and many others I can't remember right off the top of my head.

That, and the fact that there definitely seems to be multiple actors playing the same roles in the pictures on the Myspace pages, seems to point toward multiple/alternate storylines.

Very "Twilight Zone." Wink

Not to butt in (though I know that I am)...

I'm not very impressed by gore. Generally, the suggestion of violence is much scarier than violence itself. Why? Because nothing that you can put on a screen will ever be as scary as what a person can imagine. For example, the infamous shower scene in Psycho is considered by many to be one of the most terrifying scenes in the history of film--however, it shows very little actual violence.

I think that the 'honesty' of the handheld camera perspective will certainly make the film more frightening--however, excessive blood and gore need not be shown to present a terrifying film.

Besides that, nobody is even phased by gore in America--it's the sex that gets people up in a tizzy. So, IMHO, unless there are excessive sexual themes, I expect to see a PG-13 rating.

Obscure? OBSCURE? This viral marketing campaign--as disappointing as it has been--has reached large mainstream exposure. Everybody saw Transformers this summer; everybody said, "What the hell?"; and everybody is eager to find out what, exactly, is going on. Besides that, there are three months left until the release of the film--you wouldn't expect to see big marketing for it at this point.

I'd almost guarantee you'll see trailers on TV in the weeks leading up to the release of the film.

Sure, we'd *expect* to see TV trailers leading up to the release date.

But when was the last time JJ Abram did anything anybody expected? Wink

Sure, I'm playin' a hunch here. But just keep this hunch in mind come January 19, 2008. Lemme know if I was wrong. Cool

What does it matter? People still bring their screaming spawn to movies with R ratings.

Yeah, plus all you need is someone who turns 17 in december, and you and all of your 16yr old friends can watch the movie. Ild guess R, because of language, scenes of terror, and besides, whose ever heard of a classic pg-13 horror/thriller movie?(The village was decent, not epic, or even great really.)

PG13 brought us The Sixth Sense.
R brought us Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever.
