Not exactly spam, I'm not really sure what it is.

This morning I received a letter. It contained a couple of sticky notes which had *88208209112* printed on them, with groups of 3 digits alternately yellow and purple.

Is this big enough to be some kind of code? I'm not sure what else it could be. I've not been active in any ARG-type stuff since before PXC, so if it is a puzzle, I'm guessing one of my RL friends is running something. (I know at least 4 people who have been planning to start one, although haven't heard anything about any of them recently ... they probably gave up under the weight of planning, but this makes me wonder)

tinag, that's a way to hide a recipient list... send an email to a known address, and hide more recipients in the BCC list. happens a lot, and most of the time that method adds to an email's 'spam score'...

on another note, how about this email - spam? or trailhead?

Seeing as it has an obviously spoofed header, I'd be willing to be there was a picture embedded in the email.
It had a gibberish subject (and content?) to bypass certain types of spam filters. Usually this type is generated from a routine that adds a randomized "from" email and content, so spam filters that count identical emails coming into a domain don't see it as a single, shotgunned message and delete it. Your spam filter may either have a routine that sees no intelligible information and deletes it or may be smart enough to see that it "looks like" similar emails other people have marked as spam.

The image they include is monitored by their server to see which IP Addresses requested it and viola! They know who opened (or previewed) the email on the receiving side and that they can add that email address to their database.
