[Meta] [OOG] Recommended films
1-18-08 type films

Even though we don't know a lot about 1-18-08 we do know that it is an original monster movie. A good film that I enjoyed called Children of men is a end of the world type film like 1-18-08.
I have seen some other film suggestions, so I thought about having a thread dedicated to films that we might like.

I lurk all the time, but found this video and thought it seemed a lot like 1-18-08. This is about a boy who films his families thanksgiving, but ends up capturing a lot more.

Enjoy
from this thread
and...

If you want to see a movie with a similar backstory, in a somewhat similar vein and style, see The Last Broadcast.
I incidentally caught it on Bravo or IFC one day, and it was really impresive.
I would actually suggest that some of it's concepts (in a filmmaking sense) might apply to the topic of our current interest.

From this thread.
So, do you have any good film suggestions? If you do post them here.

Ah yes, Children of Men is a kick ass movie, i love Clive Owen. He is one of my favorite actors now. But OT i'm not sure about movies that are like Cloverfield.

If you mean movies shot with a camcorder in order to seem more realistic there are a few out there...

1. (of course) the Blair Witch Project
2. Det okända ("The unknown, a swedish movie, pretty cool!)
3. Sleepwalker (another good, creepy swedish movie you should check out!)
4. The Last Broadcast (Kinda similar to Blair witch)

These films don't contain any real similarity to a "monster movie", at least not in the size that 1-18-08 seems to have... But the fact that J.J says we will have a REAL trailer in time, and now the pre-vis for the trailer, i'm starting to think that this might not be a "camcorder-shot" movie at all... I guess we won't know until the real trailer is released.

The Host is an excellent movie. The director is a genius and I think he is now working in Hollywood. He created a monster movie that defies many of the conventions of monster movies. Let's see if 1-18-08 can live up to that level of originality.

We played a game created as a promotion for that movie called Monster Hunters Club. If you're bored and want to see a way a movie ARG might go, you could check out the threads. One thing I got to do was go to a showing of the film here in New York hosted by one of the characters in the story.

I'll have to second (or third) Children of Men & The Host as good movies.
The only other good movies I've seen recently have been Pan's Labyrinth & Apocalypto. (All foreign movies; go figure)

On another note, I just finished re-reading The Stand & have to recommend it as far as apocalyptic novels go, along with The Dark Tower series also by Stephen King if any of you are into (lots of) good reading.

Good Book, Movie was just ok was "Prophecy"(1979). Wish they remade that with the technology today.

Swan Song by Robert McCammon is one of my favorite books. Post apocalyptic nuclear war book along the lines of the Stand. Evil Demon walking around and such. Excellent read, about 1000pgs. I've read it 3 times.

Ditto, I've read it several times as well. Blows The Stand out of the water.
