I think that first line is actually "OBERES GEHEIMNIS" which is German for TOP SECRET.
Just for the record: that is a babelfish translation. It should actually be "STRENG GEHEIM" Wink

Yeah, when I Googled the original version with the 'r' it corrected to that, and I though it mentioned somewhere that it was a babelfish job.

Thanks for the correct version, it's always interesting to know.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Looks like the compass is a A-Z substitution cipher (there's 26 segments on the compass. It also looks like NNE part is the 7th of the 8 (i.e. TUVW).

However that makes the symbol "|" would then become "V", meaning the message on the map would have 3 "V"s in 18 characters, which is unlikely. It may be read anti-clockwise which would make it "U" which is more likely to have 3 occurances, or there may be another stage to this.

BTW, here's some rough coordinates for the symbols on the map, reading top-bottom, left-right:

Code:
η   68N 44W
Δ   57N 74W
|   48N 117W
~   41N 82W
α   38N 13W
η   30N 55W
ø   24N 99W
|   14N 21W
Ш   02S 88W (or 02S 87W)
Ш   03S 75W
α   08S 45W (or 07S 44W)
α   10S 83W (or 10S 82W)
=   16S 86W (or 16S 85W)
Ο   17S 10W
.\   19S 51W (or 18S 51W) (fixed)
Ο   22S 68W (or 21S 67W)
ø   22S 58W (or 21S 58W) (fixed)
|   23S 75W (or 22S 75W)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
corrected some coords by 1 degree to match up with the official ones!

Ok, thinking about the alphabet replacement spec, I wanted to see what that looked like. So using the edited version of the map with the symbols circled, I did two edits with the appropriate letters overlaid onto the symbols. One is based off the alphabet progressing around the compass clockwise, and the other counterclockwise.

I'm not seeing much in either one. The letters aren't yet seeming like they'll anagram to anything. There are a lot of symbols around the compass that I couldn't make out, though, so who knows.

I think the symbol on the compass is actually a '.\' not a '|' -- what's strange is that there are some symbols here that don't appear (I guess there is a lot more space around the compass anyway). (Whoops, wasn't reading closely enough there.)

Also, I wonder if the discovery of the original map was planned (notably because it doesn't seem to align "quite right" with this new map -- the segments as defined by fold boundaries are a bit jittered w.r.t. each-other). I tend to think that probably it's not so crucial as the symbols and the coordinate system, though.

I've been following this ARG for the last day or so (that's when it started), and the game's website for longer (Enigma puzzle was there maybe a few weeks ago), as I quite like the prospect of the game in question. However, on videogaming websites there's not much interest for this kind of stuff, so I'll try to help out here, if I can.

The website game started with some relatively easy puzzles (Enigma machine) as far as these things go, but it's getting a lot more difficult now it seems. I figured out the tattoo would probably have to be overlaid onto the map, but I couldn't figure out where. Now that's been solved, but I still don't see where it leads. I guess we'll need to find more missing pieces of that compass.

One thing I did manage to figure out is the code on the paper attached to the notebook page you get to see after clicking on "Jungle" on the 2nd map on the website - a map that appears after the Enigma puzzle is solved

The code on it is:

927
EMTKWUM
BW
BPM
RCVOTM

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The code is a simple shift cipher, with key being 8. If you roll each character by 8 positions back in the alphabet, you get the message:

WELCOME
TO
THE
JUNGLE

So the message could be useless, I guess, but maybe this same cipher is used elsewhere in the game for something more important. As for the number 927, I have no idea what that represents.

Also, by searching for map's author name (Diego Phillipi, found on top right), I found a site where the original version of this map can be seen in much higher resolution than the one linked from Kotaku:

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gutierrz.html
Click on this link, then click on "1562 Map" at the top of the screen, then when the page loads, click on a map thumbnail and zoom and navigate around.

You can see it with their online browser, but they offer an 18MB image compressed in JPEG2000 format for download as well.

One thing that can be seen on this high-res map that couldn't be seen on the smaller one, is that the area on the far left that's damaged on the game map has an island there, labeled "Insula Unfortunata" (Unfortunate Island?)

I have also tried replying to a CraigsList posting but no replay from the 'seller' yet. I tried sending just a price offer, and a message found in full on the original map - "nec spe, nec metu"

Cross_ wrote:
@ixalon: the photo you found earlier is also for the same website game. Probably not for the ARG though.

I thought so too at first, but the tattoo + map overlay proves they are actually connected.

Hello Marconelly, welcome to the unforums...
.. and here's your first Trout since the engima has already been adressed. Wink As for the numbers:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Those are the "peg positions" in their little enigma machine, i.e. put first peg in spot #9, the second peg in spot #2, etc. starting with #0 on the left hand side.

That could be useful. I just wish we had a higher res version of the craigslist map..

Same here.

A perhaps interesting observation: looks like delta appears on the compass just CCW of S... kind of wish I knew where the eta (η) and phi (ϕ) fell, though.

Oh, I know the enigma has been addressed, but I didn't see that other code addressed - the code that you get after the Enigma machine puzzle. I read this thread but didn't see that mentioned anywhere.

*edit* Ah yes, I see where you actually addressed it. I just didn't realize I should have used the machine to decode this Razz

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So are you saying that if I set the pegs into 927 position the machine would decode something else? The pegs need to be in the 831 position to decode the door opening code. If I put pegs into 927 position, the machine just types whatever I type

*edit* ah, nevermind - I get it now, the switch on the right decides if the message is encoded or decoded! It's funny that I solved this 2nd code without using the machine

To annoying to quote spoilers so sorry for unspoilering this....

Yes, if you set them to that code and type in the letters you got from the second notebook (after the u-boat) you get the WELCOME... message displayed on screen. The developers did not mean for you to guess the shift value that's why they provided the 927 code directly so you only have to use their little machine.

I have to admit I was skeptical about the tattoo, but I just did the image manipulation again and now I am convinced that website and ARG are linked. Nice Very Happy

Cool, Uncharted looks like a great game to advertise with an ARG.

So, two thoughts here. I'm going to 'spoiler' the first even though it probably isn't worth it:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The VII on the tattoo could indicate that the first letter in that segment is letter seven (i.e. G), which would make the letter just clowckwise of W 'A' and so on. This makes the alpha-ish character into 'e' and | into 'i' -- which means lots of vowels for anagramming pleasure.
In top-to-bottom, left-to-right order I get:

η|~Δϕ ηα|ψ= αψ\αロ |ロϕ
?I??? ?EIDF EDCEA IA?

Or with guess at delta and squiggle on the compass:

?IYS? ?EIDF EDCEA IA?

Secondly, the linking web page made some mention of the coordinate system of the map, and I'm inclined, somewhat, to believe them important. The labeled lat and long give a 6x6 grid, so as a first stab I tried putting together the symbols by "overlapping" each cell of this grid... but I don't see much, yet, in the result.

So, I made up a few grids where I did actually overlap all the squares. First I tried just going the regular route, but a lot of symbols collided (maybe this was actually good? ah well).

Then I thought "well, there must be some reason for the zero" so I flipped everything vertically that was below said zero axis... of course it still doesn't do much.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

...though I do notice that one might have the words SAFE tward the top of this and HIDDEN tward the bottom -- mostly that's wishful thinking, but it does maybe make a promising anagram?

I wonder if there is a way to make anything line up with that blank frame?

Now for my two thoughts:

ixalon wrote:
The tattoo photo from http://www.piratecrimes.org/ contains the north-north-east section of the compass rose... (you can just make out the first 2 symbols on the compass match those in the tattoo...)

Also, I can see the VII from the tattoo is also on the compass rose exactly as if the tattoo had been laid on. it is just above the infinity marking. Nothing really new, but it adds confirmation.

Second, the map you get from the submarine in the website game has three numbers on it which could very possible be another set of Enigma positions. I have no idea what they would decode though.

And another transform of this map in hopes that someone sees something in it that I don't; this time, I've folded the map (as if along the creases) and tweaked the alpha channel so you can actually see all the symbols. Not so terribly satisfying a result (to me), by maybe some other folding might hold promise.

That frame is taunting me by its very lack of content.

Mentions "Brothers of Drake"
I guess now we look for posters...
