I asked my Chinese-teaching friend. She said it meant "correct something wrong" or, in other words, fix.

That's the problem with languages, everything has 5 different meanings, and unless you know the context, it makes no sense or could be used in all 5 of them xD But we get the picture already. There's something that needs to be healed/fixed/repaired...

Okay, so, let's consider the context.

First of all, obviously, it's a directory on a computer, so it may well be some kind of troubleshooting program.

That mundanity aside, let's consider the real important bit of context we have: for some reason, that directories name is in a completely different language than the rest of them. Why? Why a different language, and then why Chinese?

Have we ever decoded the last 2 Twitter posts? They may hold a clue that we need.

I'd also like to know what embassy JC was working at.

Well, JC did 'ping' the IP address of a Chinese embassy in the bash screen on red-monday.com

The bash changes depending on whether you login with 'gabriel' or 'nereus.' At least, that's what it looks like to me.

Third symbol = http://www.manythings.org/kanji/d/6551.htm
also listed as salvation; save; help; rescue; reclaim.

And the First two looks like they might translate into Plain aka simple.

So i'm thinking its simply a rescue tool.

It displaying in chinese isn't too big a deal as linux can handle directories like that if set up. And had if JC is working at an embassy it may be the chinese embassy/consulate. or such.

Actually, both "gabriel" and "nereus" show the same thing now: the AQ Khan pdf.

thebruce quoted the old "gabriel" screen, but it has been changed.

Right, there's nothing odd about a directory being in Chinese. But the question is, why would there be an inconsistency? If it's a chinese server/computer, okay, but then why have english as the language for the other directories?

The name certainly doesn't seem to imply any particular connection to the chinese.

Here's a thought: What the if the code is part of the message? For example, it could be a directory of files stolen from a chinese fileserver that were damaged in the process and are being repaired. Pure speculation, but worth thinking about, at least in my opinion.

Also,

The software being used is called Midnight Commander

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_Commander

The inconsistancy comes from multiple install processes.

The "Kanji directory" might of been created by an install process, unzipping an archive or some such that was created by a chinese/japanes user.

While the rest of the directories created by hand or by following guidelines.

I believe most linux use standard ascii set by default but for different alphabet support. It adds support and doesn't remove the base package.

Haven't looked into this deeply since I primarily deal with english Smile

Yup, it's midnight commander with a different than default theme. I've never seen Chinese/Japanese shown in an xterm (at least in Mac OS X) but I don't have much experience with international linux too.

EDIT: "Official Midnight Commander builds still don't support UTF-8 locales (Bug #7936). There are, however, unofficial patches from Red Hat and SUSE (added input, editor, viewer).

UTF-8 is unicode, which I think is needed for characters like Chinese ones. It's not represented in Ascii.
