[NEW] The Message/What is Silver Ladder
...and I'm not talking about Grand Master Flash...

I know a bunch of us caught this last night, but it needs to be posted. For anyone that's just checking us out for the first time, here's a direct message from the PMs about what to expect, and what's going on with Silver Ladder.

http://www.silverladder.com/message.htm

Listen Closely...don't listen to it at all...

I couldn't get anything to play on the message page. But I found the source for the file: http://www.silverladder.com/silverladder.mp3 which then has the link back to the message page.

For the record, it's a picture of a crop circle and the wingdings (or whatever font) translate to:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
We love you, Fe.

Here's a transcript. I'm pretty sure it's all correct, but I've only listened to it once, so there may be errors.

Quote:
What is Silver Ladder? That is a good question. The answer will vary from on person to the next. Silver Ladder cannot be defined with a concrete, one sentence answer. It is many things to many people. Some call it art. Some call it a movement. Some call it a gathering. Some call it a statement. Some call it a journey. Some call it a story. Some call it nonsense and confusion. Some call it noise.

All of these are right, all of these are wrong. What can be defined clearly is how Silver Ladder will work, at least to begin with. There are fifty-two cards in a deck. There are fifty-two weeks in a year. Each week for a year, a new card will appear at silverladder.com, starting with the two of clubs, the lowest card in the deck. On November 11, at 11:11 am Mountain Standard Time, the rabbit hole will open at silverladder.com All of the content which is up at Silver Ladder right now will be gone. It is not relevent to this journey.

With the opening of the rabbit hole, the two of clubs will officially be revealed, and begin to truly exist. As he is revealed, pieces of information will be presented that begin to form a picture, that begin to tell a story, that evoke thoughts and feelings and ideas. The thoughts, feelings, ideas and emotions that the passengers on this journey get from each new card that is revealed will inevitably get reflected back toward the deck. The energy coming from the passengers will change the story as it is being told. A straight line will become curved, a left turn will become a right. Sentences will be erased. Sentences will be written. Sentences will be rewritten. New faces will appear, familiar faces may dissapear. Things will change. Things may change drastically. Things may change subtly. It depends on you.

You are not reading the story, you are writing it. You are the ones painting this picture. Do not expect a bang when the rabbit hole opens. It will start with a whisper. You may be surprised at how little appears on Silver Ladder on 11/11. Don't be confused: it is merely the first part of the first chapter. As new cards appear and new things are created it will all become much more detailed, involved and complicated. If we started off sprinting, far too many passengers would be left behind at the starting line, and people would leave the path out of frustration. Instead, we will start out walking, perhaps crawling. But don't let the pace of the journey, or the apparent simplicity of its beginning distract you from how much is actually being said. A sketch often says more than a mural. And rest assured, this sketch will eventually become much more than a mural. It will become a map. It will become a map as large and expansive as the terrain it is a record of.

Things will be required of you on this journey. Those things include patience, intelligence, creativity, participation, interaction, a desire to seek answers, a desire to change yourself and your surroundings for the better. A sense of caring for your fellow passengers. An ability to handle change and conflict. An appreciation for mischief and the beauty of chaos. And not least, a sense of humor.

There will be moments of joy and laughter on this journey. There will be discovery, there will be unity. But there will also be moments of conflict. There will be disappointment. There will be confusion. There will be loss. This is not a sprint, this will be a marathon.

Will you be able to complete this journey with us? As with so many things having to do with Silver Ladder, only time will tell.

Phew! That took a while.

Huh?

The *images* don't work? I don't know what that has to do with HTML skills. I looked at the source on SL, and it's the standard IMG SRC tags. Not hearing the embedded audio is one thing (Get Firefox, guys!), but not seeing images is just insane. Sounds like a browser issue. Indeed, the HTML at SL looks like a chimp did it, but it works fine. If you can't even see images, something is wrong on your end.

Nice transcript, Once!

Here are a couple places where my interpretation varies from yours:

"Some call it a movie" I heard as "Some call it a movement." However, yours may be right.

"Things may change subtly" is most likely right, since it follows "Things may change drastically" as is used for contrast. However, it also sounds like "Things may change suddenly" to me.

All the rest seems dead-on accurate to me. Again, thank you very much for taking the time to transcribe all of that. The message is a very important piece of info to share with new passengers.

Okay, have stupid question. The message under the video says "Video by Loli" - did AnonymousLoli make the video? Or did the PMs make the video? I'm curious.

And you can use this video I made now, too:

(as quoted from here - the second link in the quote leads to the "What is Silverladder Video")

Are the PMs using stuff that the players/passengers create?

I think the PMs have asked the original/first group of players to 'recruit' more players for the official launch.

This is true, but I've also just made cards for their myspaces. They appreciate any and all creative things given to them or done for them.

Are PMs not supposed to allow material by players to be included in an ARG?

This silverladder thing seems rather untraditional to me. Thus far, it's not like any other ARG I've been a part of or read up on, so it wouldn't surprise me if they do things completely differently (i.e. incorporating player material).
What are the "rules" of an ARG anyway? I mean, short of the TINAG ethic and PMs not posting on UF, *are* there any?

I think the more people dictate "rules" regarding ARGs (implied or demanded), the more it'll stifle creativity and the more it'll scare off future potential PMs from making their own ARGs

I like what silverladder has shown thus far in terms of bringing player-created things and ideas into the ARG. This thing hasn't even officially launched yet, and it's already the most truly interactive ARG I've seen so far. Not that it isn't without its faults, however. The HTML on the site leaves something to be desired, that's for sure. What this ARG lacks in technical strength, however, it seems to make up for in spirit.

There are no "rules". Frequently PMs have used player generated materials IG. Some have encouraged it (*cough* Sammeeeees2 had players generate material in blogspot "cells" opened up for them by a character in the game, they were 'tributes' to Mithras asked for by the character. Later players created a minipuzzle trail for a character to answer a call for material/video and the PM had to solve it for the game to continue).

That's one of the great things about ARG - it's chaotic!

Thanks for answering my question. Smile What was confusing me was
Quote:
here's a direct message from the PMs
- I couldn't figure out why, if the PMs made the video, it was being attributed to Loli. And now I know.

As for player-created content - many, many ARGs have encouraged players to create material for the ARG. Kona mentioned the Raven Cells, MeiGeist asked people to send pictures of black and white cats, and I'm sure there are many more examples I could cite if I wasn't too lazy to go looking for them right now.

This does lead to a second question - if the PMs asked the original bunch of players to recruit, have the PMs contacted you guys directly, as PMs, or through characters?
