For those of us who weren't there, care to be a little more specific on where these came from? Did TOBI himself show up at the chat? Or did Thad give you guys these? Do you know what they are supposed to end up as, for instance numerical or alphabetical (obviously they rarely give us that but thought it couldn't hurt to ask)?

Speculation that the "/2" means to divide all the numbers (which are all even) by two before processing the code. In which case, the string reads:

49|20|61|6+44|20|77|61|74|63|68|69|6+45|67|20|79|6+46|75|20|54|68|61|64|2+45|

20|57|61|74|63|68|69|6+45|67|20|61|6+43|6+43|20|6+46|66|20|79|6+46|75|2+45|

Feel free to double check my poor math skills!

Well, I thought maybe the numbers divided by 2 were supposed to be atomic numbers, so here's what i came up with based on that idea:

Incapmsncairpmweuertmsbhocaauterecaxeerpmgdag

calapmweuertmsbhocapminincatedycaautereag

Anyone wanna see if they can get anything out of that?

It doesn't appear to be simple substitution, but the index of coincidence is .0673, which is pretty close to the index for a normal piece of plaintext. (0.667) A random message would be .0385

That means that this is probably on the right track.

Well, in the interest of cooperation, I think the + have to be word breaks. And I've exhaustively searched through nine letter words that end with the same 6 letters, and do not have a single duplicate letter in them. I've found bupkis. There are just too many. But I did go through every single one starting with I (since that's the likely final word). I think it is safe to say that I should leave codes like these to the experts, cause after 5 hours I'm spent. Let's hope there'll be plenty for my mind to wrap around later, since codes are obviously not in my realm of expertise.

Here is the partial solve:

I aJ watchiKg yLu ThadC WatchiKg aII \f y\uG

Here is the full solution:

I am watching you Thad. Watching all of you!

After trying a few simple things, I realized that hex 20 is the space character and worked the rest out from there. Each number is the hexadecimal value in ASCII for the corresponding letter. The sums were used to avoid using the letters A-F which would have made it obvious to anyone with an understanding of hexadecimal.

You can see an ASCII chart here.

The funky letters in the first line are the direct translations of the sums. I used common sense to correct it.

Funky Letters

Great solve Bill!

The encipherment of the funky letters is convoluted but there is method in the madness.

After the decimal division by 2, the '+' characters are:
6+44, 6+45, 6+46, 2+45, 6+45, 6+43, 6+43, 6+46, 6+46, 2+45
The '+' doesn't mean addition, it means concatenate.
The '6' and the '2' are for the first hex digit. The numbers 43 to 46, are hexadecimal and can be looked up in Bill's ascii chart as the letters C through F.
6D, 6E, 6F, 2E, 6E, 6C, 6C, 6F, 6F, 2E
These hexadecimal numbers can now be looked up in an ascii chart (just like the rest of the message)
m, n, o, ., n, l, l, o, o, .

Oh my goodness. Quick, go back to the CTW pages for the Greywethers login and see if this logic makes sense in those 13 pages of (what we thought were) math problems:

I just wanted to say thanks to Bill and Lysithea for explaining their solves so well. And to the guys in IRC last night (I can't remember who all was talking but Bill, Triple, Mos, and whomever else was pushing me in the right directions). I was so frustrated after working on this thing last night, but I think I finally get at least this form of decoding. Heck I even understood enough that I immediately got the slight alteration that Lysithea found. Thx guys, you've restored my faith that I might actually manage to be a useful participant in this game. Very Happy

Dangit! I was on the ASCII track and then gave it up because of the weird sums! Just goes to show...I am lazy. Confused
