"Game"
wait a second

I found this SL thing a few weeks ago and have been trying to check it out. It seems cool, and many people involved seem totally insane, which is awesome. Screwy But I don't see how it's a game - I mean, can you lose? Can you win? How? Are there puzzles or tournaments?? Secret codes? Do we all get free Xboxes for playing? Dunno Your site is cool and all but SL doesn't seem like a game.

It's not a "game", but it's closer to an ARG than anything else I can find.

Join in and get involved, and you'll see what I mean.

Also, it may become more game like once the rabbit hole opens.

Welcome, Reckoner. Always cool to see new people speak out.

I tend to agree with you. I get the idea that this is not going to end up being an ARG in the traditional sense. Actually, it seems like it could end up being something even bigger if the right people take part. I think a lot of what it will end up being might end up being lost on a lot of people who are expecting a traditional, paint-by-numbers game with objectives and such. I hope I'm wrong. I hope they do get into it.

I hope this ends up being some crazy bizarre adventure that confuses the hell out of us but for some reason continues to suck us in. It's been that so far. LOL.

Whoa, I never thought of it that way.

Seriously... interesting question. Someone already made a Robert Paulsen (sp?) joke in IRC.

There ARE some parallels!

Actually, I spoke with the Two of Spades and made a joke about fight club, and she said her first rule is that she always has to win. XD

Anyway, Reckoner, welcome. :3

In general, Alternate Reality Games are not about winning or losing, in the gamer sense. They are about team building, community spirit, doing the right thing, following a chaotic story where you affect the outcome.

There might be puzzles to solve or websites to find, key words to say to a character, real world drops or meets (live interactions) and we (as players) all win with the thrill of discovery occurs.

konamouse,

The terms you put it in are perfect. I haven't heard it explained exactly like that before. I like the sound of it, and hope that's what this will end up being. I get the sense that it will.

there are two kinds of games, finite games and infinite games.

the goal of finite games is winning.

the goal of infinite games is to perpetuate play.

p.s., nice radiohead reference reckoner!

Location: Some house I found. The people in it are really annoying.

My definition of ARG:

Basically an extremely advanced version of a choose your own adventure book that involves many people and usually involves puzzles, some of them very very difficult and usually involving ciphers (codes).

The better ones (like Silverladder) also involve actors/actresses that actually interact with the player in a number of ways ranging from emails to personal meetings.
