I registered so I could join in on this one. Very new to ARG but this seems a nice way to start.

Should I email smithy about JWP and LRH?

I don't know if it's relevant but the men in the picture with Blavatsky are James M Pryse and GRS Mead, who seem to be fellow theosophists of Blatvatsky.

Welcome, then! Very Happy Yes, looking like quite a nice pace so far...

Go for it, I reckon. Not sure how much occult stuff he knows about, but good to keep in touch with him, make sure he hasn't "disappeared" and all that...

I'm all caught up and loving this.

Yep, looks like that report is dead on (sorry Razz) so far! It was fascinating reading btw.

2. Smithy posted Jon Jones' letter to his Flickr stream yesterday, but now it's gone.

I saw that too, Smithy said something like "well at least he didn't put my apt #" - so at first I was afraid that would be the key & had no idea how to get it. Wonder why he took that post down?

Scribe wrote:
3. Jon Jones second message in this thread, with a slightly different number, leads to an invalid tinyurl id if decrypted with the same key

Just messing with us, maybe? Only certain digits were different, and then the last 3 or 4. Yeah... weird. Anyway, I figured the ASCII alien was just meant to confirm the grey alien/LAM connection for us, and give us something cool to look at while we waited for more updates. Which I do appreciate, btw. Smile

I wonder who this person is who "remembers Tettleson", the one with the lockbox full of stuff, and if they're important or not. I guess Smithy still hasn't found the post office.
Anyway, while we wait for him to return from the peak, this might be interesting: http://www.archive.org/details/furtherreporttoi00kanerich
It's that book on removal of the Southern Ute Indians. The entire thing is scanned for reading online and is pretty short and readable.

I must take the 5th amendment, hidden in my letters and notes, where you must realize the author was hidden in plain sight:

After being down, gulls' slow, elated flight have saw crazed, erred dreams added.

jones.is.jon' strange wording, along with the first sentence, makes me think we are supposed to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
remove certain letters from the second one in order to find the true meaning of this message.
I tried to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
remove those for the words "fifth amendment" and "legal procedure" (connected to the United States history) but no result. Will now try something based on the number 5.

I sent a mail to Jon Jones earlier, asking who he was and what he knew about Smithy. His response:
Quote:
AUTOMATED REPLY: Smithy is not who he says he is.

The plot thickens! But why is it an automated reply when it seems to be a direct response to my question?

Also, I notice Jon's sending his messages to a few of us - namely, those who have contacted smithy, I think. (Actually, this last one - the 5th amendment one - also went to smithy.)

Good luck deciphering his message...

p.s. 2 new pictures from smithy, although 1 is Jon's message. The other is a wikipedia entry on the Southern Ute Tribe - maybe there's a hint on the wikipedia page?

That sounds like a good strategy, but it's based only on the first phrase of the first sentence, right? I'm wondering what the rest of the first sentence means, since all we have of his "letters and notes" are the whopping 3 posts he's made here. Unless some of the Flickr stuff was written by him... but which ones? Does that mean he is the "author"?

Phrases associated with the 5th Amendment:
due process
double jeopardy
self-incrimination
eminent domain

If you rearrange this:
Quote:
After being down, gulls' slow, elated flight have saw crazed, erred dreams added

Like this:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A F T E R
B E I N G
D O W N G
U L L S S
L O W E L
A T E D F
L I G H T
H A V E S
A W C R A
Z E D E R
R E D D R
E A M S A
D D E D

Will give this:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
first letters spell ABDUL ALHAZRED

Very good shot, Sylvia, and very consistent with the matter at hand since

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Abdul Alhazred
is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the author of the Necronomicon, a famous, cursed book in the Cthulhu mythos. More information here a mythos which has already been alluded to when the Miskatonic University was mentioned in one of Tettleston's documents.

Maybe that has something to do with the package smithy is picking up perchance? Either way the plot thickens.

Ok, that was kinda cool. Now, I hate to say this, because I really like this game so far otherwise, but... so what? I'm sorry, but this jones.is.jon person is really starting to bother me. He's acting like an IG character, but posting here. Isn't that against the rules? If he's not IG, then would this be a gamejack, and isn't that also against the rules?

This kind of thing seems to have been rampant lately, and I'm getting sick of it. I would really, really like for someone in authority to make some kind of a ruling here. I'm not asking for anybody to be warned or banned or anything. Just a "yes, this is totally against the rules" or "no, it's kosher" - preferably from a mod or admin - to clarify things for those who prefer not to participate in games that don't follow the uF TOS. That's all I ask.

End of tantrum. ARG

I see your point petunia, especially since according to

Starting your own game or trail ? Read this first ! wrote:
Next point, once you've posted your initial clue, stop posting about it. I look the other way for trailhead posts, even though they're about as clichéd as a launch can get (along with spamming your trailhead to random members of the community), but I won't look the other way if you keep coming back. That's just bad form and in a way a little insulting to your players. This includes posting under your regular account as if you're playing your own game when you're really just prodding people along. It also includes posting under anonymous unregistered nicks or creating new registered nicks to masquerade as players or in-game characters.

I'm sure one of our admins or moderators is going to make a move regarding the situation.

Don't worry Petunia, if you follow me you'll find a promised land adhering to your needs.

However in this case, this is a definitely against TOS so Jones if you are reading this (and being a former PM I know you are) I suggest you leave this forum out of your game. If needed you may create your own personal forum as there are many sites out there.

Remember what it said in the bible:

Interest the people with a good ARG story and they will play. Very Happy

I've been lurking and wondering when someone was going to say something about that. Thanks for stepping Petunia.
