Interesting article I found just googling stuff...
"The gruesome scene could be from a Grade B horror flick: Flesh-eating parasites devour their hosts from within, then explode from their prey to seek new victims . The scene isn't fictional but rather appears to be a regular occurrence off the Oregon coast and perhaps elsewhere in the Earth's oceans. Scientists from Oregon and Mexico have discovered that a tiny one-celled parasite can infect and kill krill, a shrimplike crustacean that's an important part of the ocean's food chain."

I remember hearing stuff about the name "Parasite" back in the early days of the first trailer, and it was officially stated that the monster isn't a parasite..
But who says the small monsters aren't..

on the topic of the small monsters/parasite theory.. the only thing that concerns me about this theory is that all of the pronouns in the trailer used to address the monster(s) are singular (i.e. "whatever it is", " what is that thing", "something attacked the city", or alternatively "some thing attacked the city")
there are obvious flaws in this conclusion on my part.. notably that perhaps at the time of this dialogue they are not aware of the smaller monsters, or perhaps the smaller monsters are there throughout but their conversation revolves mainly around the one gigantic monster (which is a logical idea), but I feel like without one plural comment.. like "whatever they are", or "what are those things?" etc., I am going to remain on the one monster side, simply due to lack of evidence otherwise
i will admit, however, the Marlena's bleeding eyes make you think that there is something else other than a gigantic monster at play.. possibly something microbial in nature and that this particular "something" is related to the monster's appearance (either a symbiotic 'friend' of the monster's that came along for the ride, a 'weapon' of the monsters, etc) or , a particularly far-fetched conclusion, perhaps the means by which the military is finally able to destroy the monster is via chemical warfare in an homage to war of the worlds (resulting in a hazmat filled aftermath).. i have a pretty decent breadth of knowledge in infectious disease though, and the only thing that comes to mind is dengue fever and viral hemorrhagic fever (ebola, hantavirus, marburg virus) for anything approaching eye bleeding...[/i]

^ Eye bleeding always makes me think that the person's brain got jellified. Maybe she was so close to the monster when it roared that it turned her brain to goo and it's seeping out of her head? o_o;;

maybe we can see rob with the camera in that promo photo from the interview. hes got the camera and wen she is finally exploding he cant stand it anymore and turns around...so now all we can see is the shadow of the terrible events

Hi. I'm new but here is my theaory. You can debunk as much but htis is what i see, i see that the two "creatures" and Lizzy seem to grow, only Lizzy growing more meaning that they could hav got closer to the light, the promo pictures are way to bright. And plus in the promotional pictures, in the background seems to be giant perfurme or cologne bottles in a shelf behind some glass near the floor in the bacgkround. If she does explode thats so creepy and horrifying but i really think those are two mosnters becuase everyone seems to be screaming and running away. This is most likley becuse hte big one or the little ones are in the vicinty, "attacking" Lizzy" or she is going to explode, and they have seen the damage it could do.

Wasn't there some reference to drinking Slusho and becoming "big like a whale". Maybe something about being in the presence of the monster causes some Slusho drinkers to grow or transform into something else.

that is true. Great catch! IDK. that was my theaory above but even in fiction uless the monster has mystical pwoers or something a person can't internally combust unless the goo from the monster or something had achemical reaction twith the slusho but its hard to beleive but anything is possible in movies.

She isn't blowing up, she is turning into a whale.

Here are two more from that interview:
To me its obvious they aren't running from humans the fear and the way the look looks like the are running from little monsters because they aren't looking all the way up, like what we think the big monster's size is.

Long-time lurker here...
If you watch the original 1954 Gojira you realize that the film is far more than a rubber suit monster movie. The scenes of Tokyo in flames and horribly scarred radiation victims spoke very clearly to the Japanese audiences that had endured those same horrors only nine years earlier. The movie also alludes to a an actual event involving a Japanese fishing boat that strayed to close to an American H-bomb test. I'm wondering if, when Abrams referred to Godzilla and "our own monster" at Comic Con, it indicates that he's trying to achieve the same thing with Cloverfield : a cautionary tale weaving in allusions to 9/11, the millitary industrial complex, and biological warfare/terrorism.
It's a thought, anyway.

Another far-fetched theory - What if the Cloverfield monster is actually a secret military weapon that accidentally attacks NYC instead?
Maybe Slusho is intended to be marketed to adversaries of the U.S. and is actually a pheromone for the creature. NYC is initially used as a test market for the product to determine how people react but the creature accidentally gets loose and rampages through Manhattan looking for a mate.

I know it's a "monster" movie, and the imagination tends to give us all sort of wild imagery and conclusions in the absence of certainty. But with this release of the trailer can we all downshift a bit.
We've gone from one extreme to another diagnosing and investigating this movie since day one. And as of this trailer release little of any of it has been really taking us forward.
The little monsters, and explosions, and all sound like sensational conclusions for this scene. Even before this point wasn't this scene believed to be monsters decapitating someone?
Basically, this is fairly new info. And one thing we've learned is the painstaking deconstruction of every frame of video that comes out has gotten us very little. In fact Caplan herself, the very person who is playing the character in question in these shots has said the speculation is wrong.
So, I say let's not keep exhausting ourselves over tiny details. And focus on the larger plots, the reason for the attack, the connection to the other known entities like the drilling company and most importantly the wide canyon of unknown that's been how these people we've been introduced to carry on up until the events take place.
People are still taking frame after frame trying to figure out something no one will ultimately know until the end credits of a movie that will show two months from now.
You are not going to know what happens until it happens.

Sound of the monster? I isolated the ominous "clicking" sound that prompts Marlena to ask "What is that?" immediately and with obvious fear. It sounds very predatory, whatever it is.
