People are discussing those shots as if they are taken from the footage. I would pose that since they were apparently officially released to go with this interview, and because they are all very well lit and not in the correct aspect ratio that they are simply promotional shots taken to represent the actual scenes, either as a part of a dress rehearsal of the scene or a dry run through. Some of those look pretty posed, like the holding of the door. Rob is giving the impression he's pushing hard, but look at the woman's arm - see any muscles clenched there? They can also take promotional shots from any angle they want, whether they are representative of the actual footage or not.

People thought that those shots were pulled from footage? No way. They were shot during shoots, but in a staged, separate way for traditional press kits and EPKs. Pretty standard movie fare. Heck, even old Friday the 13th movies had the same deal going...I've got a few of those press kits!

However, they are certainly indicative of what will be in the movie. They wouldn't randomly throw dudes in blue suits in for no reason.

100% agree. I do believe these were taken during filming, and/or dress rehearsals, as you mentioned. I imagine the "Making Of" featurettes will be quite revealing when it's out on DVD. This type of film will lend itself well to "Behind the Scenes" imagery and deleted scenes expanding the story beyond what's possible in the theater, where I imagine we'll be left with more questions than answers when it's over. I already want a Director's Cut Unrated!!

I think they're discussing this on the Marlena thread.

In the trailer -
There are alot of exterior shots.

Ok, just a thought here, and as usual, i could be off base. But these new photos, they are too perfect.

I realize the new trailer was shot 100% in handheld camera, but i find it very odd that the new screenshots are so clear.

What do you guys make of it. Sorry i forgot your name, and where you posted, but a graphic designer said (one of) the photo(s) had been altered through photoshop. This leads me to believe that
1) the movie may not be shot in 100% handheld. the odds fell from 8-3 to 2-1 in my mind.
2) The shots may not be included in the movie, and may have been given to us to throw us off. JJ's been sooooo secretive so far, and now he lets out these revealing shots, c'mon.

Way off base? probaly. Sorry if this chops up a conversation.

Makes me believe that they will only use hand held for slight perspective and shoot regular for most of the film.

Here's some clips of the TJ Miller interview that claims the opposite:

You've also got a role in this untitled JJ Abrams project.
Yes it is. I can't talk about it at all with you.

Will audiences get their fair share of T.J. Miller in this?
Audiences are going to get less than any share of T.J. Miller. They're going to get a fraction of what is considered a fair share of me. You will probably see my face for possibly 3 minutes and twenty-five seconds. It's possibly the weirdest situation I've been in. But you'll hear me, and I'll be present in the movie for the entire duration of the film.

[bi]Is that information that you are able to reveal?[/i]
Yeah, I think so. You can say that it's safe to say that because I'm behind the camera and you're going to hear a lot more of me than you're going to see. And you can get that from the preview. In the preview you don't see me at all, you just hear me. It's going to be crazy. It's going to be everything the JJ Abrams fan wants out of a movie and probably more.

That tells me the majority of the movie, if not all, is shot in "Hud-vision" -- at least until he gets squashed/eaten/maimed/exploded/lost near the end. After all, Hud is definitely a play on H.U.D., or Heads Up Display.

I do believe the meat of the film will be on handheld, and the stuff we're seeing in the trailers (such as the gorgeous overhead view of the headless SoL) will simply be used to bookend the film.

Aside from stylistic choices, I understand Cloverfield isn't working with anywhere near the budget of similar monster movies -- the handheld thing is a good way to mask that. They probably have enough moolah for a couple of good teaser shots, but I really doubt we'll be seeing much of them in the film.

In fact, at this point I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever get a head-to-toe look at the monster at all. In a way, I hope we don't.

Well, even if we were to see the whole monster, would it even be possible to get it in frame and focused with that hand-held camera?
