Tamil SOLVED!

taking what we knew, I couldn't get the "dictionary" at http://www.webulagam.com/dictionary to spit out any words, I went to

http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/tamilweb/tamil.html#fonts
and downloaded the tamilnet font.

then I was able to peruse
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/tamilweb/tamilenglish.html
for the words on the post cards.
after translating the title of each as either THIS #1 or IT#1,
I then got GIRL for #4
TRAIN for #5
and TEMPLE for #2.
feel free to check my work at http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/plc/tamilweb/englishtamil.html

after getting TEMPLE for #2, and since ___ TEMPLE ___ GIRL TRAIN ___ ___ ___ doesn't seem to make a good sentence, it dawned on me that postcard #2 is a picture of a Temple.
So I think the Tamil word is what is on the front of the post card.
To verify, we checked #3 for the word TEA, and it matches. And postcard 3 is a picture of Tea Fields.

more to come.

So far....

#1 - looks a lot like LIFE
#2 - TEMPLE - picture of a temple
#3 - TEA - picture of tea
#4 GIRL
#5 TRAIN?
#6 starts off like Mountain/Hill, with extra letters.
#7, we'll have to ask http://www.livejournal.com/users/laserninja/
# 8 Mango? Tree? - picture of Tea shrubs.

Please chime in, and let us know what's on the front of the postcards.

#6 http://www.unfiction.com/~tienle/clouds.jpg The text mentions tea, eucalyptus and that it's called "the land above the clouds". In other words, mountains.

Going with ozy's being train and showing a train, I'd say that mine is "tree" and not "mango". I'll scan it later if need be, but it's a landscape and trees are pretty evident Smile

Also, as I mentioned in chat, the text is "Tea is actually a shrub, AFAICT. Eucalyptus grows huge here, as does cedar. It's very green and lush, but quite cool."

Tea Trea, Eucalyptus tree, Cedar tree.... seems to fit a bit better than mango.

My postcard is of a young boy standing beside an old man who is petting a crouched woman with his foot. I kid you not.

EDIT: The back of the postcard explains this as "The Toda Blessing, Ooty, S. India. The Toda priest ceremoniously blesses a believer."

Show Your Work

This is a compilation of my work to date.
This may help if you don't have a tamil font installed.

missing postcard

so, 7 of the 8 postcards made it to North America. #7, UZ's, was lost in transit.

so I've gone to the trouble of reconstructing the postcard given what little information we know.

Arrow UZ, is also known as laser ninja
    Arrow UZ is in Canada
    Arrow Gupfee was in India
Arrow The top of the message was in english
    Arrow the bottom in Tamil
Shocked and UZ is fond of bunnies that wear food on their heads.

so I give you
the front

and the back

that is what I believe the postcard originally looked like.

feel free to send any unwelcome comments to /dev/null
