now please hear me out.

this advertising campaign is very similar to Godzilla '98. Never seeing the monster, quick little half glimpse of it here. It worked for Godzilla. I mean that movie had tons of hype. Maybe they are trying to do the same thing.

Secondly we need to start giving credit to the writer and director of the movie and less credit to JJ. I mean he is just the the producer right? not the writer, director, idea originator. I think the director and writer and done a great job with what i can see. Kudos to Matt Reeves and Drew Goodard.

I'm pretty sure that JJA is the creator who probably hired a writer and director to flesh out his ideas, much like he is the Executive Producer for Alias and Lost. I'm basing this on his own comments at the Comicon this year, where he describes wanting to create a monster movie while visiting Japan and seeing all the Godzilla toys still in the stores:

Audio of the speech

Rough transcript

I'm not saying the writer and director don't deserve kudos, but they are working under JJA's guidance, without a doubt in my mind.

Paramount is primarily bankrolling J. J. Abrams and his vision of what he wants in the movie, and using his name as for promotion of the movie. So it's safe to assume that he would be using a writer that matches his vision, and not some writer he's reluctantly accepting.

Exactly what I said, sans Paramount bankroll.

Yep, here's a quote from TVGuide.com:

One movie that Abrams is casting Grunberg in is the buzzerific disaster flick known only by its myriad working titles (i.e., Cloverfield, 1-18-08, Slusho). "It'll probably be something where no one will be able to tell it's me," he said. "As you know, J.J. calls me his good-luck charm, so he's got to put me in there somewhere. I actually went to the set the other night, and it was really exciting and cool. The budget is not astronomical. But they're doing incredible things."

TV Guide is a bunch of douchebags who can every once and a while put something together...

However, the fact that the SoL or monster that looks like the SoL is still lame.

Maybe It's like the code name/now title? In front of your face and you miss it.

So if you think that greenish thing is the monster, and those are legs...

Did Lady Liberty's dress fall off? Surprised

She wears a long flowing dress that wouldn't show any sense of a groin like what appears to be legs are attached to. She'd also have a pretty hefty gut too I'd say. Laughing

Sorry, the SoL is a statue, not a good basis for any living thing.

So would... "Holy crap I saw it, its huge!" suffice? Why would "I saw it, ITS ALIVE" its huge be said? ...Its just still bothering me. How many times have we heard "oh my god what is that thing" or "where did that thing come from?" but "ITS ALIVE" is ...uuugghhh plaguing me. And the almost quiet moment when they're in the store before the windows break, he was about to tell him what it was, he sounded like he was about to explain what was alive. IDK I don't expect to know until 1-18-08.

…But then again, if I may be double minded here for a minute, "What is that thing?" I don't know but what ever it is winning." is also suggesting they don't recognize it or just maybe only the good people at TAGRUATO CORP? Hmm.…any who, until next time.

As I said back on page 2 of this thread, "it's alive" is a declarative to make it clear it's not a natural disaster or man made attack or mechanism. Someone yells "it's alive!" after explosions rock the city and rain fiery debris, I basically know it's not an earthquake, volcano, meteorite, bomb, rocket, missile, or kamikaze vehicle.

As I said here, the line isn't 'don't know' but 'whatever it is' and the import of the statement changes appropriately.

during the bridge scene during the trailer for a brief second you can see what i believe to be the monsters head. I know its not the best screen cap, sorry, maybe someone else can do it better. it happens at 1:55-1:56 something cleary raises the bridge and and then disappears out of frame.

There's been a lot of speculation about the monster, and people keep comparing it to Godzilla or a dinosaur. But, based on JJ's comments at the S.D. ComiCon, I don't think this monster is going to be in any way appealing. He said King Kong was "adorable" and that Godzilla was "charming," and that, by contrast, he wanted the NEW monster to be "insane and intense." So, I say it's not like a dinosaur, and it's not anything that the audience would ever cheer for (so to speak). I think it'll be downright mean and, most of all, scary.

And, considering the hand-held style of the movie, I don't think we'll ever see very much of it. That would work with keeping it scary - once we see the thing in full CGI glory, we won't be scared anymore - we'll just be thinking "wow.. cooool..." Alien was scary as hell, in part because they never fully showed the monster (and that was mostly because it looked like a guy in a rubber suit once it was fully revealed, but still - it had the right effect).

Anyway, a point about the trailer: at the very end, when they're inside a helicopter that is spiraling down to the ground (w/the alarm blaring) - the sky outside looks to be a pre-dawn white/grey. So, perhaps that's close to the end of the movie? Perhaps we get to a point where we think someone might make it, might be flown to safety, but then... BOOM! Down ya' go. Just a thought. Sorry if it's been mentioned already.

we should focus on this...

I highly doubt we'll get any solid clues or hints as to what the creature is. I personally don't want to know until I see the movie, it'd ruin it for me.

Lets hope they don't change the title in French so that it gives away the main plot of the movie. You know the movie A Time To Kill? Well in French it's called Non-Coupable. That means Not Guilty in English. It seriously ruined that movie for me.
