I look at this picture and come up with a different but equally horrible scenario. I think the effect looks like she is being splay from the front. It does appear that what she might look like profile suddenly appears on both sides of her. Just a thought, too clean for the soldiers to do so I think Chest-Burster is most likely what is going on.

i made a pretty nice slow motion video of the girl expanding. i'd also like to point out that it makes it really clear that the guys in hazmat suit are just holding her arms and taking her...um to the left of the shot. they dont hit her or anything.

I've been floatin around here for a little while (as in, a couple days)...
I know this "happy talk" quote was mentioned elsewhere, but the connection wasn't made. On the Slusho! website's Happy Talk page, one of the quotes is "I'm so happy and full of Slusho that I might burst."

Now, I know that the woman who's "exploding" isn't exactly happy, but I wonder if the idea of bursting might be (subliminaly) related.

I don't think it's anything coming out of her chest, like in Alien, because, then, she wouldn't be expanding...there would just be something coming out of her chest.
I write, and I come up with numerous plot ideas (about 75 at the moment), and I always try to have a realistic basis, because that's what helps get the audience involved. With the handheld camera technique, and the focus on one group of people, it would appear that JJ Abrams wants that extra level of believability, so it makes sense that the "exploding woman" would be as based in reality as possible (that is, as possible as it is for a monster flick to be based in reality).
But, that being said, having her (Marlena, so it would seem) expand to the point of exploding seems cartoony to me.

I really doubt that's a jacket coming off like some people have said. With the two hazmat guys holding onto her and no free arms how exactly would that be achieved?
