 small, band-related ARG

my band has been inactive (at least as far as anyone not in it is concerned) for almost a few months.
we're having a comeback show of sorts in january,
and i decided to try a sort of ARG/viral marketing experiment to build hype and promote the show.

basically, what i want to do is build mystery and hype about the date for awhile without actually letting anyone know it's a band show,
and then eventually revealing the mystery behind the date and getting people to come.

i am completely unfamiliar with being on the puppetmaster side of the curtain, and i'm more of a casual AR Gamer, so these are pretty much uncharted waters for me...
i stumbled upon this website, and now i'm here to vent/outline/incite discussion/ask for advice...

1. our target audience is basically our fanbase and their friends and anyone willing to go to local shows, which presents issues like:
A) our fanbase (which we define as people who have expressed to us appreciation and/or enjoyment of our music and/or performances) is pretty small; definitely less than 100 people, probably even under 50.
B) most of our fanbase is completely oblivious to the concept of an ARG, and does not easily engage in riddles and puzzles unless they are overtly presented as such; but we still want to engage them and interest them in the hype without scaring them away, or worse, having everything go over their heads.
C) we don't have a rabid established fanbase a la Nine Inch Nails. (i'm allowed to call NIN fans rabid, seeing as how i am one of them...)
D) our fanbase lives within a 25-mile radius, tops.

2. basically, the medium will be limited to myspace profiles, band songs (on the myspace music page for our band), videos (youtube and myspace videos), and possibly AIM and email, and will culminate with the actual performance.

3. more than anything, i want to focus on the date at the surface level.

4. i want there to be a deeper meaning, tying the videos, the songs, and the performance together, but i don't want to hit people over the head with it; i want it to be there for those who search, but not necessary for those who won't

5. obviously, timing is a big issue, considering that the show date is planned for early january; at some point, the mystery surrounding the date has to be dropped, we have to reveal the address, the time, the fact that it's a show, etc, and we have to promote it like a regular band show.

6. the "rabbit hole" is going to be subtle. one of the bandmembers has changed his display name to the date of the show in a textual "month.day" format, and i've replaced one of the buttons on my comment box on my myspace profile to display the date in a numerical M.D format.

...so yeah,
that about covers the bases for now,
seeing as how my brain is too overworked right now to keep going...

questions? comments? suggestions? advice?
any experiences you'd like to share that may help me out?
do you think this idea is any good? original? stupid?
is ARG even the right vessel for this?

please give me feedback;
i'd more than greatly appreciate it.
again, i have plenty of ambition and ideas, but no experience whatsoever.
consequently, i have no ego about this, so feel free to tear me to shreds.

thanks.

:]

Hey Pollux Smile

One thought that I'll throw out there is that you guys have a nice situation in that you're doing something local. Do you have names & addresses for your the people in your fan base or some of the more active ones? Do you know clubs and places where they'd hang out?

If you want to create a mystery surrounding the date, then I'd send them a flier of sorts with nothing but the date or, maybe, have the background be a cool symbol that fits with the overall theme that you want to keep a bit more "hidden" and then the date in big letters on top of it. If I got something like that in the mail, I'd be curious. Then I'd hit them up again in a couple weeks with the exact same thing with the venue listed. Then just a couple days before the show, with the band name and some more details added to it.

You could go with this same approach if you know the clubs they hang out at and then just do an (admittedly slightly annoying) drop on all the windshields (or just theirs if you know their cars).

If you have any new music that you've recorded, you could always take bits and pieces of the songs and put them on a cd or thumb drive and get those to them as well. If your fan base contains a rather tight knit group of friends, it would be pretty cool to send each of them (you could even do this via email) a portion of the song (say a 30 second clip) and let them realize that they there are a few different clips of it out there that they could piece together.

The big trick with ARGs (well, with life in general, but especially with smaller grassroots args), is to take advantage of what you have and to turn your weaknesses into strengths. Don't know if that advice will help you any, but there you have it Smile

Since, as you said, you're not dealing with a crowd that is likely to be big on the puzzles, it might be worth taking a look at some of the more experiential things (SF0, the WhySoSerious stuff) for ideas on emphasizing on bringing gameplay to the public space.

For instance, have a friend hang out at a coffee shop in distinctive dress (maybe imbri's symbol idea on a shirt or something) and tell your fans to check out the location between certain hours. If they approach him/her, have something cool planned (either a scavenger hunt-type thing, short speech, or hint that it's something you guys are involved in)

A big thing you want to consider is what kind of time frame you're dealing with--is this going to be a day-long thing you're planning, a week-long thing, or will it extend beyond the concert and be a vehicle you use to generate a broader audience?

Pollux, before I did any of this stuff, I was in those indie band trenches. Striving for too much is going to be biggest your enemy, so focus on ways to keep it small. Because it is there, in your local region, you can have alot of fun with playing with your friends by adopting this fiction, they don't need to know it's an ARG ... just that your up to something.

Instead of writing something new, think about ways to take the lyrics you've already written and blow them out into your narrative: write what you know is the perfect adage for this case.

Dates are hard to keep mysterious for too long, and ulimately you don't want the biggest secret to be the event you want to get people to turn out to, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time after that reveal to still get people to your gig -- otherwise, you might mysterious yourself into an empty house.

Sounds like a lot of fun, best of luck on that initiative!

I agree with all the comments about "live" clues and flyers.

If your fanbase is mostly nearby that's potentially a huge advantage as your medium isn't limited to just internet sites...

You could fly-post all over town or (less-illegal option) chalk words on walls pavements, whether it's the date, or a website you want them to see as a clue for example, basically just everywhere you know your fans might hang out.

Maybe knock up some "clue" posters and see if any local pubs/bars and venues will put them up for you in their windows.

Just an idea, that's what I'd do... Very Happy
