There is actually one, in London, if it hasn't been removed already. Remember that to-do list while the storm was going on? Following up on that would have led you to it.

I can post either the puzzle or a straight-out answer, whichever you like.

taureanfreak wrote:
I know there were several of us running as double agents. Did we ever confuse you?

Being a double agent myself was confusing enough! Luckily I was in the know on the Brotherhood/Union double agents that I dealt with, so it was slightly less confusing, and I didn't act any of the major DCorp side so I didn't have to worry about keeping in character there!

taureanfreak wrote:

As I said above, the learning, but also the general praise when you release a good puzzle. The Skype audio puzzle was my doing, so when I saw some of you say it was a really good puzzle it just made me smile.

And i'm so glad to see you back Lex!!!! I meant it when I messaged you saying I missed talking to you. The game really did get a little boring without your imput here.

Aww, thanks! I wanted to post so many times over here, but of course I couldn't.

Questions for you guys... let's see... at the moment here's what comes to mind:

That tCotSA puzzle that was never solved... what was the answer?

No clue. I literally had no part in that end... there was a lot of delegation. That's what made the merger to trailhead so great! When the tCotSA PM joins us in this thread, ask him!

VQ.Wavecrest wrote:
The "N." in "N. Sawyer" stands for what?

Nothing except "none of your business" if you asked him. Its a "man with no name" kind of thing. Note that all the major characters had one name... a sort of commentary on our aliased nick avatar society made worse by a DC like society.

Sadly the PM playing him left the project due to school and work, so his fate is left to um... fate? This was an unscripted and spontaneous sub-plot which that PM ran with to great success! We missed him greatly, though I invited him to respond on this thread and join us on the chat, so ask him!

That was in fact strongly implied... and there's nothing like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Side note: You guys should really be careful about posting personal information on your blogs, amazon, wow, and other similar accounts... I'm talking to you "Montreal" if you are still out there, (oh and lil miss absynthe too of course.)

/me points to the post a few posts above this one. Yeah it is a shame, Slewth was definitely a fun character to play, with his multiple personalities and all. Slewth was intended to be a character which raised a few issues in people's minds. I thought it'd be nice to base Will in the UK, in the hope that players over here could get some action if there was a live event. Slewth's fate was to be decided by the players, but unfortunately such an event didn't materialize.

quite a few actually, as I understand it. Can't wait till they are discovered by innocent bystanders... "wtf?"

probably a little, but since I did most of the main story characters I knew which ones were and weren't. I have a whole text file and chart of the crazy things you guys said... and I loved it! Also when you posted to UF I couldn't acknowledge anything you said here obviously - it was OOG completely, but as a PM I knew who the big traitors were and baited a few of you. (Lookin' at you right now Brumguy!)

taureanfreak wrote:

For me it was the moment when my wife stood behind me and asked why I was talking dirty to some guy on the internet... to which I responded: "It's not me babe, tara's kind of a tease!" or possibly early in the game when I was answering 100 emails a day as both foo and brackin and waiting for my own email to bounce back to me as somebody betrayed one or the other.

-Oh yea, and the constant fear that one of you would ACTUALLY call my OOG cell and/or business number or show up at my house. Coincidentally if you live in the N. Dallas area and need tutoring...

Yes and no. Though the next project is more of a spin-off or dare I say "prequel?"

Couple of quick (for me) questions that've been festering for a while

1. What were some of the plot points you set out that you wish we pursued more, but didn't?

The folios were intended to be a follow through with the tCotSA fans, but it was by its nature slow... so I think the fact that you recovered as many as you did was really awesome! ...Coincidentally the entire folio was written out and even created on homemade paper and inked minus a few blanks "lost to history", but as the focus shifted they became less important. It was meant to be a series of clues about the plot - and indeed many of you nailed the interpretation of the ones you had! The good news is that they chronicle all the way to 2042, so they may make their way out there eventually...

That and Pi, see below.

notgordian wrote:
Concurrently, was there anything you really wished we didn't discover or pursue?

Other than finding my OOG personal info... lol! Nope! We wanted this to be a player led, player written "Interactive fiction" experiment. Well done.

notgordian wrote:
2. Who really killed Alex Wright Sr.?

Nobody, the tCotSA (he) faked his death to fulfill the prophecy and make Brackin think that he was dead in order to aquire the folio page and bring about the existence of DC. These guys were basically the "Illuminatti" of Nostradamus lore... but you knew that!

notgordian wrote:
3. What were Alex and Phil talking about in that 2012 video, and why was the video taken down?

That vid was actually a class project last semester for my very last PhD class. It was a sort of easter egg - not really a major game element. Much of the Pi stuff falls into the same catagory, my classmate russ did a great job with the Pi subplot, but he ran out of time to cap it by faking his own death with a hologram in fujimoto's office and releasing a series of clue puzzles to help whichever side he would have ended up on...

Oh, my poor Hook.... I shall avenge thee! Pink shoes! The horror!!
I also thought of more questions! So...

If you hadn't ended the game at this time, where would the story have gone? Er... rather, which plot line would have been most stressed? Since it seemed as if Pi was going to continue (with that vid), then the chapters came out and it finished.

Do we get to see the dissertation (since it'll be published)?

I enjoyed being the God Killer and sending people on wild goose chases to find him. A little sad though that no one ever out-right accused me of it

I knew something was up when a future Chris talked and acted like a paranoid 20 year old. But since you'd faded out by the point GK was up and running, I never thought it could be you. I just knew something was off though.

Hmm, my questions...

1. Was there something I was supposed to do that I didn't catch? Igot several cryptic messages that sounded like I was supposed to "get" something, but, being rather dense, I didn't.

2. Did Violet Nightshade ever contact you about why she just disappeared? Her story line was pretty good.

3. I suppose we all want to know if we made it to the future or not. (Of course if I'm in my hidden bunker with taurean and the others then DC may not kow if I made it!)

4. Not really DC related, but Adam, how'd you find me in Facebook???!!!

I'm sure I'll think of some others. I will also answer your questions when I've thought through my answers.

1) What was your favorite aspect of DC? Explain.
PvP was probably the most interesting game mechanic with the intense player pm interaction running a second. Unfortunately, pvp is a bit flawed for ARGs because of the problem of group community. There's no way to really imply PvP because there's always going to be that one person who probably will leak to the "other side" sensitive information. Furthermore, there's no way to truly keep track of all of double/triple agents which means you can never really divulge anything deemed "sensitive" either. So while you have multiple "sides", in the end, information will just be distributed to everyone. There's always a big status quo and basically there's no way one side can have an advantage over the other except if there's some in-game scripted event that makes one have advantage over the other. And that's not really pvp either because the players had nothing to do with it.

2) What was your least favorite aspect of DC? Explain.

Infrequent updates was probably something everyone hated so I'm not going to touch on that. However, I was a bit annoyed that there were so many game mechanics and doodads that were implied but never implemented. It's frustrating to have them suggested but not being able to use them. Actually one bit that bothered me was a running line between Bishop and myself involving my sending stuff to the future. Originally in my mind I thought it could eventually become a player-activity involving either time capsules or digitally sending passages/quotes of books to the future. Because of the time/future aspect you could have interesting concepts in that say... a bottle of wine in a time capsule could technically age well to the future. Technically. I ended up having one or two interesting messages about it before I stopped getting messages at all. I think that if the PM's thought about using that as a potential game mechanic, it shouldn't take too long to decide...it could work/ it could not work/ not now and just message a player about it.

3) What would you like to see change in a future similar project?
I think that one of the major issues of the ARG for the PMs was too many things to do, not enough time/manpower. I think that a good way to improve this is to promote player-created content. Rewarding the good player created content such as Agent Hook's Manifesto encourages people to interact with it while simultaneously keeping the PM workload down. I think that one could delicately delegate certain things to long-term hardcore players too. Off the top of my head, you could get the most trusted/"good" ones incentives to help out new players as a sort of newbie guide or offer unique information to player-created groups and have them play off each other instead of primarily off the PM's. Of course you have the eventual problem of a bajillion player created groups but PM's could just ignore the new groups and not give them content as a punishment for being either an uninteresting, redundant, or deleterious organization.

4) Did DC push the current boundaries of ARG/CF? Explain.
It brought interesting new game mechanics pvp/ increased PM interaction. The increased PM interaction increased game-quality while the pvp could have pushed the boundaries had it worked effectively.

5) Was the "one year time line" successful? (11-11-06 to 11-11-07)
To tell you the truth, I didn't even notice there was a time-line set. Unobservant of me I guess.

6) How did you find out about DC? (specify IG/OOG and/or trailhead)
I think I found it oog while looking for a new ARG to follow.

7) How does DC's structure compare to the commonly accepted 4orty 2wo entertainment model of player interaction? http://www.42entertainment.com/see_images/triangle.jpg
I think that the structure seemed a bit reliant on potential new users figuring out backstory from old users. It's hard for casual or even active new users to really get into the game which means eventually the game suffers attrition of sorts. Since there's no easy way for people to catch up (ex. synopsis) there's less vested interested and so there's less people to replace those who leave due to loss of interest or whatever other reasons people leave games.

8 ) How does your interaction compare to the 4orty 2wo entertainment model of player interaction?
I think I fit between lvl 2 and 3. Overall I was a lvl 2 player except once in a while I'd try to pitch some content idea to make it to lvl 3. I think I'd probably be a lvl 3 player if I was a better puzzle solver, had more time, and had been either a part of a group or had started one of my own.

9) What do you see as the future of ARG/CF?
I think that it'll remain a sort of niche gaming market that will remain primarily a marketing/information gimmick or form of viral marketing until it figures out a way to make a profit off those participating.

10) Would you play/avoid a "grass-roots" low budget ARG/CF (such as DC) versus a big-budget "Commercial" ARG/CF?
I'd play a grass-roots one if it's quality was good. Quality of course is a factor of writing, pm interaction, and flash doodads/gizmos. Big-budget commercial args can increase their quality with money spent in fancy technology for player interaction (ex. perplex city or the heroes 360). Grass-roots ones don't have that kind of money which I can forgive if it makes up for that loss in the non-money related fields.

11) Rank the following "ARG/CF elements" from most to least important: Design (website, graphics, pics), Story (writing), Puzzles (tasks), Player Interaction (forums, IM, etc), Real-world elements (non-internet), Videos (acting, sets, youtube, etc), Other (specify)

Story, Player interaction, Puzzles, Real-world, Videos, Design*

Design has a star because while you can get away with not having a fancy GUI or pretty technological feats of aesthetics, it still has to work and do whatever function its supposed to do. So... I'd rather have a not as pretty website that allows for pming/ karmar/ credits than a pretty website that only gives information.

12) In what ways was DC "broken" or a "failure"?
I think DC "failed" because a lot of its goals were very ambitious for what I suspect was a small workforce and not so much capital. Also a lack of time. Which isn't really to blame of the PM's although I would (probably redundantly) point out that if you're going to plan such a large ARG without an obvious means of income for it, you better have a large amount of donated money/ capital prior to starting it. Not to mention be pessimistic about the amount of time you need to put into it.

Queries:
1.) Is it possible for accounting information to be available. I'm kind of interested in how much it cost and how much money you made from those google ads. I doubt the google ads actually paid for the sites themselves but I'm curious how much money they made. (I admit I clicked on one of those ads every once in a while as a sort of "donate to DC" thing).
2.) What did you make of my character anyway? I hope I didn't bug you guys too much with the time-travel business. I guess I was attempting to start a potential group that played off both sides to make sure the time-stream didn't go paradoxically crazy.
3.) And the self-serving question... is there any chance of one becoming a part of any future team project that you're working on?

whoa, it ended
pretty much on the day I decide to take a look around

I picked up on the tCotSA arc right when it started, but never got into DC, so i'm going to just pick a couple questions I'm going to answer.
1) favorite: I found the tCotSA puzzles quite interesting, using the post exclusively was a nice touch. and a PvP idea is a really great one in concept, but I can't tell how it worked.
2)least favorite: the fact that though it was a rabbit hole for DC, tCotSA started a bit late. When the two games merged, DC was too far gone for me to catch up on everything. Perhaps, in a future game, have tCotSA as a pregame type or at least make it so the players are thrown into the game proper before it hits the three week mark.

and then the main reason I'm making this post: there's a few unsolved puzzles from tCotSA (especially the shingle bit, the cookie bet's still valid, they might just be a bit stale by now Razz) and I for one would like to know what the solutions were.

You're absolutely right about everything you say here. I think the reason for the messages is we did have two ideas for how this would be accomplished, one was time-capsules and the other was an MMO type inventory system where people would be able to buy, sell, trade and even create items. We went forward with both ideas but in the end we weren't able to complete them because of lack of resources, time and money (which I'll get to).

We did this to some extent but you're right we needed to encourage more of it by making more ways for it to happen in the interface.

Well there were plans to make money but we needed money to really build the things to make it happen. I can't really go into detail on that because we believe our ideas are sound and we may use them in another project.

You're right about it being small and having nothing. The plan was to build a concept and hopefully sell some people on it. We did have several high-level meetings with such people and we've made some good contacts but it wasn't panning out so we shifted focus to Adam's PhD work. Hopefully we'll be able to find more support for future products with the groundwork we've laid here. I don't think that starting with nothing was a mistake ... lots of ideas start small and grow when they find support.

That would have depended on you for the most part... the side stories like Pi were largely unscripted, though there was a plan for him to fake his death and lead you to his present time father via a 2012 vid which would have allowed one of you to save his life... the goggles were harry potter quiddich goggs btw. Unfortunately russ ran out of time, though it might make an interesting diversion timewaster one of these days - I'll mention it to him. Brilliant guy.

Without an example I'm not sure, but likely you are referring to Theophilus's cryptic fortune cookie-like messages which steered so many into self-fulfilling prophecies... stuff like "I know you... the time is near... move forward with your plan." and whatnot. That was fun. (Dance puppets, dance!)
