EMP's generate a large magnetic field, which wipes everything not made from Vacuum tubes. And besides from the Russians and extreme conspiracy freaks, no buddy uses vacuum tubes anymore. The field would wipe even analog magnetic disks because their blast is itself a magnetic field.

But yeah, I can definitely get behind a fire bombing being used to kill this thing.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but isn't the camcorder Hud's holding in one of the pics one of those Sony's that record directly onto mini-DVD's? It might take out the battery life, but EMP's probably wouldn't affect a DVD.

 		No Nukes!
Assuming that the helicopter crash is near the end of the film, and it probably is - if it's all shot on one camera, that helicopter crash is not really survivable so the cameraman is about to die - you can see through the windows that most of NYC is intact.
Now, given the time frame of about 7 hours, there will still be many millions of people in range if they dropped the big one. Would they really do that?
Also, the opening caption suggests that it's just Central Park that has ceased to be, so either it's a limited military strike (Fire is usually a favorite in these cases.) or else the big beastie himself got medieval on Central Park. Or... it's still an infected area.
Whatever, no nukes.

The items listed suggesting a nuke being dropped on New York don't really cement that idea. The fact that Central Park has been renamed can be as simple as it being occupied by the army and being redesignated.

As for the heavy focus of the military in the film, they were there in Godzilla and didn't drop a nuke on the city. A large collection of army personnel doesn't mean the last resort.

Plus, wasn't it said that the bridge that the camera is found under is in Central Park? No amount of rubble would save it from destruction if the bomb was dropped on the park.


That, and as previously mentioned, it'd be one heck of a disappointing anti-climax.

 		I think it's reasonable to say that NYC will be destroyed in some way by the military. But I don't think that will be the end of the movie. I think the movie will start in the future, post 1-18-08, and then go back in time when they discover the camera. There will be an investigation of the events that happened on 1-18-08 and HUD's camera footage will play a big part in helping to explain what happened.
Just a theory. For some reason I don't think HUD's camera footage will be the entire film. Maybe half... in not less.

 		Low level tactical nukes, or the neutron ER weapons are a possibility. Also depleted uranium weapons.

 		They probably droped a MOAB on his ass. It would level Central Park without leaving any radioavtive fallout.

 		I don't think I can subscribe to this theory, because even if you could argue a tape's survival in a nuclear situation, most of the audience's response to that ending will be: "What?! Then how did the tape survive?!"

I personally don't believe that the movie will offer any kind of major closure on the monster; at least, I hope it doesn't. Kind of figuring that the movie will end when the tape ends, and my assumption is that the tape will end before the story does...so to speak. It might seem like a cheat, but by not making things so finite, we'll leave the theater with the impression that all of the awful stuff is still happening...and that's way scarier.

 		Yeah, using a nuke to end things is just so cliché to me. With how much Abrams likes to be a non-conformist, I doubt he will take what most of us think would be an easy way out.
