2D Assignment
Did you do your homework, kids?

So we know 2D gave us an assignment to make something. What'd you do?

I made this little ditty. It's called "Every Time I Talk To You, I Get The Feeling That You're Going Out Of Your Way To Be A Deck!"

Verrrrry cool Iron. I leik teh ambienty.

Since I'm not too skilled in visual art and I have no recording equipment around, I decided to give 2D a quote. It's a tad long.

Quote:

2D,
I have a quote here for you that I think sums up my thoughts this week. This one happens to be from my great-great uncle, who was a famous painter in Quebec. This is an excerpt from his rather controversial manifesto, Refus Global (Total Refusal).

"The items of this treasure , art, reveal themselves, inviolable, to our society. They remain the incorruptible, sensitive legacy for tomorrow. They were ordained spontaneously outside of and in opposition to civilization, and await freedom from its restraints to become active in the social scheme.

Therefore, our duty is simple.

To break definitively with all conventions of society and its utilitarian spirit! We refuse to live knowingly at less than our spiritual and physical potential; refuse to close our eyes to the vices and confidence tricks perpetuated in the guise of learning, favour, or gratitude; refuse to be ghettoed in an ivory tower, well-fortified but too easy to ignore; refuse to remain silent -- do with us what you will, but you shall hear us; refuse to make a deal with la gloire and its attendant honours: stigmata of malice, unawareness or servility; refuse to serve and to be used for such ends; refuse all intention, evil weapon of reason -- down with them, to second place!

Make way for magic! Make way for objective mysteries! Make way for love! Make way for necessities!

To this global refusal we contrast full responsibility.
...
We foresee a future in which man is freed from useless chains, to realize a plenitude of individual gifts, in necessary unpredictability, spontaneous and resplendent anarchy."

I, personally, have only dabbled in visual art. Literary art and music are more to my liking. Nonetheless, I believe his words have resonated with me, and they are relevant in any way we allow them to be.

Hemlock.

Nicely done, Fe. I like it.

And, not surprisingly, I agree with almost everything in that manifesto...

And I had already seen Falcos' video. I wonder how you do that...

I sent him this email, along with two photographs (which, of course, I'll share with you all.)

I apologize for the lateness -- a friend visited from out of town, and you know how you all stress that family and friends comes before the Deck every time. Smile

My final thoughts are that I've learned a lot from your week. It's taught me to look more within myself for reactions to art rather than just giving a rash reaction to them. I have to think more carefully about what I say before I say it, especially when it comes to things people have created. Don't just say something is good or bad, think about *why*it makes you think that. It's definitely something that I will try to continue to apply to my life for as long as I live.

I have photographs for you. At the end of my street, there's a chain-link fence they installed earlier this year. For some reason, they want to keep us out of the desert/wash area. This makes me sad, as I enjoyed taking walks in there. I got to see small rabbits, snakes, birds... I got to see the indigenous plants and wildlife, and it always made me appreciate living in Arizona more. How am I to appreciate what I cannot see or enjoy?

I hope you like them, and I hope they fulfill your requirements. As with my gift to you, I am including a .zip file with multiple sizes.

I draw for a reason. Smile

I sent an email and a poorly composed picture of a playing card that I threw into a piece of fruit. http://valrik.net/index.php?showimage=93

Either the 'bargames.xml' is in the wrong folder, or the revenge.xml needs to be renamed to 'bargames.xml'

I wrote 2d an email... telling him that "judge not lest ye be judged" and gave him a song title and artist to check out.

I'm not gifted in video, audio, photo... or art in that matter. I can write to an extent, but prefer to keep writing light so everyone can understand what I'm trying to say. the scariest thing that I learn this week, though is that... I may be more like 2d's personality than any other card we've met so far. Not really, I like to play around more than him.

Because 2d actually asked to include a quote of something I said during our disscussion in his final reflection and attribute it to me, i'm guessing he took that as part of the assignment and I'll include that material as well.

Quote:
That is the heart of the problem. That critics feel that art is worthless without their input. That art cannot be appreciated without a filter. That art is YHWH and that critics are rabbis, writing their own Talmud of criticism. That by justifying their own opinions, they can be considered as worthy and vital as the artist is beyond hubris.

2D

My response with the words he asked to reference in bold below. He said that he didn't agree with what i said, He liked the way I said it so I'm very interested to see what his use for it is.

Quote:

Funny that you should draw the religion parallel because I think the same argument can be made about that as art. Both are personal journeys. Art about your relationship to the work. Faith a personal connection between you and whatever spiritual belief you hold as intrinsic as it is extrinsic. I enjoy discussing both topics and a multitude of others but I would make a horrible evangelist as I do not believe the goal of such an exercise is to ultimately turn them to my way of thinking but for each of us to learn from the discussion itself. I don't think that anyone has the right to that least of all me but I can listen to someone share their opinion realizing it may still have some value despite the arrogance with which they present it. Just because they are of the all to sad and incorrect opinion theirs is the only truth doesn't mean what they say doesn't have value so long as I am not a blind disciple of the opinion. I feel one of life's detriments is to accept someone else's word as truth without evaluating it in light of your own knowledge life experience and instinct.] Without doing so you are merely a mouthpiece for others beliefs but also to fear to listen to a discordant opinion is to stop growth.

Michelle

For my assignment, I opted for a story which I'll include as a pdf

Quote:

This is hardly proof of any skill, but proof of effort may it serve. It's not limited to discussion of art either but does represent my thoughts about the discussion or at least tried to. I sort of latched onto the dark hall motif. My medium of choice has always been verbal not visual but I hope you enjoy.
