The Recalcitrant Child

by Melody Heller, Amboy Monthly

The search is on for TOBI, the brilliant child of Ideltech minds. But what does TOBI represent? Is is simply the next generation of search tool or is it able to learn and think and grow?

Robert Gryfft of Ideltech sums the dilemma up nicely:
"…everything depends on ToBI and as yet he's an unaccounted variable in all this. The professor assumes he is loose, intelligent, and benevolent. Marcus assumes (TOBI) is loose and uncontrollable (correct me if i'm wrong.) Omniscient Eyes believes (or purports to believe) ToBI is loose, controllable, and not intelligent. Restorers believe he is loose, malevolent, and intelligent.

At this point however, we haven't any communication from ToBI. We can't assume that he is in someone's posession or loose and a free agent. We can't assume he's benevolent, or malevolent. We can't assume he's even intelligent. We need evidence. I've been grilling experts on him, and researching on him. If I assumed what the Professor does, his argument would make sense. However he may still be guilty of false premises in his arguments."

The heart of TOBI is the Genetic Algorithms used to fine tune the program's abilities. Charles Ofria of Caltech spoke about various methods currently being studied (http://www.krl.caltech.edu/~charles/stories/alife.html) and came to the following conclusion:

"… certainly demonstrates the ability of a genetic algorithm to cause a computer to be able to figure out problems in unique and creative manors. This is a definite place to look in the path to true artificial intelligence."

Steven Levy in "Artificial Life" comments:
"…anything created by artificial life methods is totally transparent - the programmer will be able to analyze anything inside of it. Effectively dissect them without harming them in any way. We can also observe how they do evolve and learn a lot more about out own evolution. The proof of how the Baldwin effect worked is a great example of this."

It does leave open the question on how to deal with TOBI:

Will a program based on Genetic Algorithms develop itself into a powerful individual being?
Will a program based on Genetic Algorithms be able to discriminate between things which we see as being "good" and those we see as "bad," or will it develop in a manner that makes it run itself in the most advanced manner possible?
Will a program based on Genetic Algorithms be able to incorporate suggestions from us into itself to make the program more acceptable to us, even if it reduces its advancement?
Will a program based on Genetic Algorithms be able to become more than the sum of its programming or will it be limited regardless of the amount of time it is allowed to make improvements?
