Update AmboyMonthly Features 28 June

The Other Side of the Story - Alecia Church

by, Melody Heller, AmboyMonthly.com

I received a rather enigmatic e-mail this past week from Alecia Church, the representative for Omniscient Eyes, the firm rumored to have offered $316 million to Ideltech for TOBI.
The following was taken from several e-mails and clarifications, I hope I have been faithful to the information she offered.

Alecia Church: Ms. Heller, I would like to clear up a few misconceptions your readers seem to have about Omniscient Eyes. Many of them seem to be of the opinion that we are a large well funded firm that stays one step ahead of the competition by purchasing better tools in a hostile manner from the smaller firms. Please let me assure you this is not the case.

Amboy Monthly: Could you please explain why the offer of such a large sum?

AC: We value privacy. Our firm is over 200 years old. We were instrumental in many turning points of history. It was the ability to accomplish our goals quietly and without a lot of fanfare that makes our service to the governments of the world so valuable. Money is only one way to accomplish this. I regret that in Ideltech's case, our normal methods to deal in good faith were taken as being hostile.

AM: What "turning points" has your company been involved in?

AC: It was my forefathers who gave the information to Dr. Joseph Warren on that April night in 1775 that sent Paul Revere to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that a number of British Regulars were on their way to capture the two men in Lexington or destroy colony stores in Cambridge. We were instrumental in World War II, convincing Albert Einstein to defect to America. As terrible as the nuclear weapons were, their use prevented a longer and much deadlier war. More recent events we have been involved in were much more diplomatic area, assist negotiating the terms that eventually brought the Berlin Wall down and re-unified Germany.

AM: It sounds like your company has many successes.

AC: We have also had our share of failures. During the End of the Eisenhower Administration and beginning of the Kennedy one, we did our best to try to dissuade them from seeing Cuba, Castro and Communism as enemies they had to take action against. My father was of the opinion that left alone as the only Communist country surrounded by Democracies and Republics, that sooner or later the Cuban population would turn away from Castro without our interference. Instead the administrations chose to support an invasion that led to Cuba gaining a powerful ally, one who might have ignored them otherwise.

AM: I'm surprised that we haven't heard much about your company given it's involvement in world affairs.

AC: My company does not seek to capitalize on the information gathered. Over the years we have been instrumental in all these different areas but did not seek to garner praise or acclaim for our efforts, because discretion is very important to us and to those we serve. Being in the public eye would make it much more difficult to do what we are requested to do.
AM: It sounds as if you consider yourself to be more of a diplomatic service than an information gathering one.

AC: That would be somewhat accurate. Another description might be think tank. We do more than just collect the information, we also look at the information not just for content, but also the context the information is found. For example, there may be someone who works for a company that builds chemical sniffing robots such as those used to detect explosive devices. Say this employee suddenly starts searching for a lot of various bomb making techniques. We feel that something like TOBI would spot the activity and report it, but fail to take into account that it may be that person's job to challenge the robot by coming up with new and different devices to expand the robot's capability. A machine might not be able to see that correlation. We bring the human elements of reasoning and common sense to the process. It is what sets us apart from things like Carnivore and other Data Mining organizations.

AM: Why do you feel that your reasoning is better than these other companies?

AC: In part, the company philosophy reflects the personal values of our employees. We have an extensive vetting process to ensure that all our employees value discretion, and understand that we are not attempting to interfere in individual's lives. Our only goal is to protect lives, prevent wars, and to minimize the loss of life should we not be able to completely fulfill the first two goals. You might also look at the fact that my company has been family run for all of the 200 plus years. I grew up surrounded by the ideals my company was founded on. For me to go against those ideals would be like cutting off a part of myself.

AM: It sounds like you have a very strong ideal that you believe in.

AC: In some ways, I am not all that much different from Mr. Tidwell, or the founders of Ideltech. Mr. Tidwell wants to see personal privacy respected, and so do I. I certainly do not want to see students pulled from classrooms simply because they decided to do research into ICBM treaties, or because someone goes out and buys a gun that is an inch shorter than allowed by local law. Like the founders of Ideltech, I certainly want to prevent terrorist activities and the senseless needless loss of life that accompanies them. I like to think that my company has had 200 years of experience walking that fine line between the two.

AM: The investigation into the recent bombing of Ideltech and the deaths of two of it's founders lists you as a possible suspect doesn't it?

AC: Due to our offer to purchase TOBI of course we are listed among several suspects. I am certain that further investigation will clear my company of any suspicion. We have offered to assist Law Enforcement in whatever capacity they need to find the person or group responsible.

AM: Thank you for the information on your company Ms. Church.

AC: Thank you for allowing me the opportunity clear up any misunderstanding there may be.
