[SPEC] ParafFun Recall
Why, When, Where, and Who?

Alright, so, I hate when somebody posts a new thread based around a discovery or revelation that has been known or discussed for the past few days. However, if there is any post based on this idea yet, I have yet to find it via the Search bar.

People have been wondering why the ParafFun Wax would be recalled. And as the SPEC tag in the title of this thread suggests, I have a theory.

The Tagruato company's new voice mail goes as follows:

Thank you for calling Tagruato. Due to high call volumes, your call has been transferred to an automated answering service. If you have questions concerning our ParafFun recall, please leave a message, and one of our associates will find and support you as soon as possible.

Notice that final statement: "one of our associates will find and support you as soon as possible." Find and support. That is to assume that you are in need of assistance... Something is wrong with the ParafFun that would cause them to have to recall the item. But what, you may ask. What possibly could be wrong with the wax that they call back all shipments?

But when one looks at the ParafFun page on the Tagruato website

One of the many byproducts of our Petroleum reservoir is paraffin wax, an alkane with dozens of handy uses in your day to day life! Edible, malleable, colorable, and a fine electrical insulator. ParafFun! Wax Distributors meets all your wax needs.

One word should stand out: Edible.

My theory is that, perhaps, just as the Cause hacked the website, perhaps they poisoned certain shipments of ParafFun, and the poisoned product was released to customers before the problem was identified.

After all, if you turn back to the "find and support you", you may (as I did) think of an Evac situation, in which you may need medical attention.

Read the article on this website: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/189105/recalled_pet_food_contains_rat_poison.html , in which hundreds upon hundreds of bags of pet food was recalled because of a poison found in them. Upon research, I found that many believed that the source of the poison took place in China, and what's worse, was done intentionally.

Maybe, just maybe, the same has been done here. Perhaps, as I said before, The Cause has poisoned a product of the Tagruato's, so as to hurt that company that is "destroying our oceans".

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns?

Sounds right. I just have one problem -

Why would anyone eat paraffin wax? What possible motive would you have?

Remember there are more uses:

Preparing specimens for histology? ParafFun!
Coating your waxed paper? ParafFun!
Propelling your hybrid rocket motors? ParafFun!
Improved bowel movement? ParafFun!
Lighting your camping lantern? ParafFun!
Testing samples in infrared spectroscopy? ParafFun!
Moderating neutrons? ParafFun!
Making a box of crayons? ParafFun!

Everything from improving bowel movements to moderating neutrons...nice. So, for the constipated atomic physicists out there...

Ever seen those funny wax bottles you bite to get the drink out of?
Just one example, other foods have used edible wax packaging too.

This is one of the most well-written [SPEC] threads I've seen in my short time here on UF.

I think it's a good theory. We'll just have to wait and see until someone either stumbles upon something or we're dropped another hint.

You are correct, MrToasty. Indeed there are. However, your quote has also answered Bacon's question.

Someone could eat ParafFun because it both coats hard cheeses, and also because it improves bowel movements. And if you look at that, mixed with Jamie's insistence on cranberry pills, which work as a natural diarretic (in layman's terms, it makes you have to go), I believe we may have connections.

But yes, it IS possible, I suppose, that the Tagruato men will find you and support you in your creating of paintballs if called upon. But for now, I think I'm going to stick with the edible aspect of it.

P.S. Thank you, Beware.

Agreed that it is most likely one of the edible uses that are involved in the recall. However, with the recent spate of toy recalls due to lead paint and harmful chemicals that children may ingest, I could see the crayons being a target of the recall as well.

Right you are, sir. And you'll have to forgive me when I say that, while it seems like we're talking about two seperate things, what you just said is exactly what I'm getting at: chemicals puts into the wax that, when ingested, can caused harm.

So, okay, I can see where the room for Crayons could cause the recall... but in the end, it all ties back to my theory; that there is so unintended poisonous chemical in the ParafFun that causes the customers harm.

In short, I think, without realizing it, we just agreed with one another.

Sorry, I realized it but just didn't state it succinctly - we are in agreement. My first comment was directed more at the comment as to why would anyone ingest wax. The second makes the case for accidental ingestion.

Paraffin wax is often added to chocolate, especially when dipping things in melted chocolate, like strawberries.

The addition of paraffin to the chocolate candy gives it a nice, glossy finish and helps it remain solid at room temperature.

Thank you for answering my questions about edible paraffin wax, everyone. I still don't see why anyone would WANT to eat it, though.

I like the idea of poisoned candles. The candles burn down, the poisons are released into the air? Still, crayons and/or hard cheese coatings sound like equally good reasons. The Cause's poisoning of the wax though, sounds a very impenetrable theory. And, on a sidenote, when we do The Effect's blog entry on the recall, can we link it to sea nectar? Please please please?
