NOTE: The website makes it pretty clear the movie is "based on" Asimov's short story and includes some of his characters. Expect departures from what Asimov thought about robots.

For example, wasn't the mindreading thing a later development in the robot series?

(I'm not admitting how poorly I did on the trivia tests. Dammit it's been decades since I read a lot of those books! Well, I didn't "fail" but I could have done better. Sad )

Kind of sucks when there is a departure from the original book. Worst case in point: The Lawnmower Man. Come to think of it, the original story would have made for a lousy movie.

To date; I've only seen 3 movies which actually followed their book, word for word. Those three are:

Stand By Me (the body)
Shawshank Redemption (Rita Hayworth & Shawshank Redemption)
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (same name)

Total Recall was another huge departure from the original story (which also would have made a lousy movie if strictly adhered to). As I recall, both Lawnmower Man and We Can Remember it for you Wholesale were about three pages long.

In other story massacre news, everything I hear about the upcoming film version of Phillip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly makes me cringe, cry, and cower.

We can remember it for you Wholesale is, like it's counterpart Minority Report, a relatively short story (ok so M.R. is a lot longer but still not a complete novel) that has been pretty much used as a ground for, but not literally translated into, a movie. The atmosphere and setting from the stories are taken, some minor/major parts of the plot as well, and turned into a new but related storyline. There is nothing per se wrong with this kinda thing (Minority Report ranks pretty high in my fav list of movies).

With I, Robot, it's a little diffferent imho. Although I, Robot is in itself a collection of short stories, they are part of the vast universe that Asimov created, a universe that is consistent and coherent and has some vital properties like the Three Laws of Robotics and the attitude humans have towards robots and the place they take in society. When you just take some loose threads from the plot, some names of certain characters (and make up others) and disregard the rest of the universe these snippets were originally set in, I don't think it's appropriate to market it as an "Asimov themed movie". I had rather seen that someone took up the courage to turn the Foundation or Robot series into a series of movies, the way Peter Jackson dared to do with LOTR. Now we are stuck with this half-breed of a movie carrying Asimov's name, and that does not do him justice at all... which doesn't mean it will be a bad movie in itself, but still...

Well, this is just me ranting of course, and maybe only because I'm kind of a die-hard Asimov fan, but still... Bicentennial Man, although not an entirely bad movie in itself, didn't really do Asimov justice either and this I, Robot movie will probably lessen the chance anyone will ever try and make a pure Asimov movie in the near future Sad

My offer of writing/creating a plotline for an Asimov-based ARG is still standing btw, if any group of PM's is ever interested Wink Very Happy
