While this probably means absolutely nothing, but didn't 5 drilling stations open up a year before the overfishing? February 5th or something?

Ehh, 20 days off. But still a year before the overfishing.

It would really help, obviously, if we knew how long the password was - I assume it's a word, and that it translates to numbers on a telephone keypad.

It's tempting to think TIDO (or TIDOO, TIDOK?) is the password, b/c of the roman numerals and names on the hacked Tagruato site. One problem with this is that the password is a Tagruato password, and that hacked page is NOT from Tagruato (presumably, it's from "The Cause").

On the other hand, the password would not realistically be hidden on a Tagruato website, e.g., the Slusho page ("Hammer" or "Mitten"). Why would a company hide a password on it's own website?

So, maybe the password really IS on the hacked page - it's encoded there, as a message from "The Cause" - to allow other people access to Tagruato's information, etc. So, we're back to TIDO again. Another possibility is to use the Latin Genus and/or Species names for each sea creature:

I - Tanner Crab - Chionoecetes bairdi
II - Irukandji Jellyfish - Carukia barnesi
III - Dumbo Octopus - Grimpoteuthis [Note the similarity here to "Grumpypants"! ... Grumpyteeth?] Laughing
IV - Ogrefish (aka "Fangtooth") - Anoplogaster cornuta

So, TIDO or TcIjDoOf? Or, CCGA.. CbCbGAc..?

It's really difficult to guess without knowing the parameters - how many letters, etc.?

Also, I noticed while looking these up that both the Ogrefish and the Dumbo Octopus are "benthic" or "abyssal" creatures, i.e., they live very deep. The Irukandji Jellyfish has that nasty sting, which leads to "Irukandji syndrome." The only thing I could see interesting about the Tanner Crab is that it was overfished between 1996 and 2006 - something "The Cause" might be interested in. Also, the Tanner Crab is often mistaken for the Opilio crab, and the Ogrefish also has identity issues... the juvenile form looks so different from the adult form that biologists had classified one form (juvenile, i think) as Genus Caulolepsis, until they realized they were the same animal at different life stages. So, we've got a whole mess of possibilities for assembling a password. Hurm...

This may sound weird, but there may some gene experimentation here. GATC may be the code, or some form of that. There are how many possible combinations of that?

GATC
GACT
GCAT

and so on.

I remember, although it was out of game, that one site that talked about gene mutation.

One other interesting thing about the wikipedia entry on the Tanner crab is that it was created in June of this year. It's not a fictional creature; there are plenty of other references to this crab elsewhere on the web, but I just found it odd that this wikipedia page was created during the month before the teaser was released.

Just for our own reference, I got this from an old post on another thread...

6/14/91 - Jimmu drilling station opens
9/14/92 - Suizei station opens
9/11/92 - Annei station opens
9/18/92 - Itoku station opens
2/25/95 - Kosho, Koan, Korei, Kogen, and Kaika stations open
11/7/98 - Suijin station opens
1/30/01 - Suinin station opens
5/17/03 - Keiko station opens
3/15/05 - Seimu station opens

Another possibility for the number/password is that they're specific to some person, i.e., if each extension is for a different Tagruato office or employee, then they would have individual passwords for each extension. So, we should look for a password that's specific to whichever person's extension we're using (assuming we find such a number). On that note, who's mailbox are we looking for? Nicole Phillips? Ganu Yoshida? If it's Ganu, or some sort of Special Projects Division, then I'd vote for "Noriko" as the password. I mean, she's got to play into this somehow, right?

Also, speaking of gene sequences:

Quote:
Official Symbol LAMB1 and
Name: laminin, beta 1 [Homo sapiens]
Other Aliases: CLM, MGC142015
Other Designations: cutis laxa with marfanoid phenotype
Chromosome: 7; Location: 7q22
Annotation: Chromosome 7, NC_000007.12 (107351499..107431040, complement)
MIM: 150240
GeneID: 3912

Notice the ID number at the end: 3912. So, maybe "LAMB1"?
This is from http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=gene&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=summary&list_uids=3912
I got this from older threads speculating about 3912 after that recipe card appeared on 1-18-08.com

I need help 'cause i'm a little lazy.

If anyone wants to post a combination to get through this system, I will dial it and report back. Simply state it in this form:

1. Extension
2. Mailbox #
3. Password

But I think that Melampus is on to something there, with Noriko and whatnot. I had already known about 3912, but the LAMB1 that 3912 relates to could mean something...maybe Wink

Long time lurker stepping out of the shadows for a moment...

Maybe the Roman numerals are the mailbox# and the words are the password. So for mailbox 3 the password is "dumbo". Could be way off but I thought I would throw it out there.

Ah, so I see we've moved on to hacking PHONE SYSTEMS now... This can't end well...

Thanks for the warning; I had my team of three writers preparing a response. Well, two of them anyway... third one's on strike.

Let me post the question out there: has there been in the past any ARG/ARE that has used a "phone system needing code to advance the game" method? I understand there being a recording, but have codes been needed in order to get more information from the phone system?

Also, think about it people... I know they're a big company, but do you seriously think that Paramount Pictures would set up an entire, standalone phone system for this purpose alone? The recording is provided by a service; I think we've established that. I'm willing to bet that Nicole Phillips is a Paramount employee.

I can only comment on the experience I've had with ILB. Attempted hacking of a voicemail account got an ingame response asking players to stop.

Nighthawk makes a good point. Similar to the incident with the Photobucket accounts, this is most likely run by a third party and gaining access to the system could allow messages to be deleted or the outgoing message to be changed.

I think PMs need to make some kind of fail-safe for situations like this...xP
Although maybe if there's gonna be an in-game response like you said it will be now, due to our little chats with Togashi/the receptionist. (mostly hinoai tho :3)

I think that if this was a legitimate puzzle in an ARG that puppet masters had set up for people to solve then there would be a logical in game solution that would make sense when we worked it out.

Reasons why I don't think this is in game and that you probably shouldn't attempt to get in to the account:

This is not an ARG (though I think that's probably too definitive a statement given the state of the ARG definition).

There haven't been any puzzles to solve so far - why start now with something this ambiguous?

There is no evidence of puppet masters responding to players, there is no stage management if you like. That would be required for a puzzle of this nature.

What do people with more experience of ARGs than me think?

Is there anyone with more experience than you (except maybe rose) that regularly posts in this forum? Laughing
I think your record speaks strongly enough of your authority to pose such an opinion. Wink
